On December 11th, the People's Procuratorate of Dong Thap province announced that it had issued an indictment prosecuting Tran Nguyen Thu Trang for "murder" and "destruction of property." Previously, Trang had used cyanide to kill her lover and then drove her car down the Bao Loc pass.
Love Turns into Hatred
Trang and Mr. MHV (39 years old, residing in Ho Chi Minh City) had been in a romantic relationship since 2022. However, trouble arose at the end of August 2024 when conflicts erupted. Trang felt she had been deceived emotionally, and coupled with family financial pressure, this led her to a horrific decision: to kill her lover and then take her own life.
Trang's first and most shocking act was ordering seven cyanide tablets online for 1.4 million VND. To confirm its toxicity, Trang performed a cold-blooded act: she mixed a small amount of the poison into water and gave it to a cat to test. Witnessing the cat's immediate death, Trang knew she was in possession of a deadly weapon.
The Deadly Cup of Coffee and the Haunting Journey
On October 20, 2024, after spending time together in Dong Thap and engaging in sexual activity, Trang and Mr. V. drove back to Ho Chi Minh City. Along the way, Trang stopped to buy a cup of coffee for her lover. It was at this moment that the intention to commit murder was activated.
Taking advantage of the moment when Mr. V. was concentrating on driving, Trang used her jacket to conceal herself and quickly put 1/3 of a crushed cyanide tablet into his coffee. About 3 minutes after drinking it, Mr. V. showed severe symptoms of poisoning, had to stop his car, and collapsed on the road.
Knowing that Mr. V. had been poisoned, instead of calling for help, Trang calmly got out of the car, asked nearby residents to help Mr. V. back into the car, and then continued driving back to Ho Chi Minh City. Along the way, Trang disposed of the coffee cup containing the poison on the road.
As Trang approached the Than Cuu Nghia toll station, she stopped the car and was shocked to discover that Mr. V. had passed away.
The Fatal Car Crash on Bao Loc Pass
After her lover's body lay motionless, Trang continued driving back to her rented room in Ho Chi Minh City. There, she disposed of the evidence: she dumped the remaining crushed cyanide and threw the unused cyanide pellets over a B40 wire mesh fence into a canal.
Trang then mixed a small amount of cyanide into a glass of orange juice to commit suicide, but only fainted in the car.
On October 21st, Trang carried out her final act, turning this case into a shocking event: she drove the car carrying Mr. V.'s body up the Bao Loc pass (Lam Dong province).
At approximately 12:00 PM on the same day, at kilometer 104+440, Trang drove her car straight into a deep ravine. Fortunately, the airbags deployed, and Trang only sustained minor injuries and was rescued by the authorities.
Two Charges and Rare Mitigating Circumstances
Upon examining the scene and the body, the Lam Dong Provincial Police quickly determined that Mr. V. had died before the vehicle plunged into the ravine, and subsequently arrested Trang urgently.
According to the conclusions from the Southwestern Forensic Psychiatry Center, before, during, and after committing the crime, Trang suffered from moderate to progressive depression, leading to impaired cognitive abilities and behavioral control at the time of the crime.
The prosecution also noted several mitigating circumstances for Trang, including: voluntarily paying 100 million VND in compensation; having a good character and no prior criminal record; and having a family with a history of service to the revolution.
However, Trang's particularly dangerous actions seriously violated the right to life and the legal property rights of others. For the crime of "Murder," Trang faces a penalty of 12-20 years imprisonment, life imprisonment, or the death penalty. For the crime of "Destruction of Property," the penalty is 10-20 years imprisonment. Regarding civil liability, the victim's family is demanding a total compensation of 2.1 billion VND.
This case serves as a tragic wake-up call about the horrific consequences of resolving emotional conflicts through crime.
