The name of businessman Ho Nhan is being noticed by the people, when he is the "father" of the COVID-19 vaccine Nanocovax - facing the possibility of becoming the first vaccine successfully produced in Vietnam.

Ho Nhan was born in 1966, is currently the Chairman and General Director of Nanogen Pharmaceutical Biotechnology Joint Stock Company, a scientist who obtained a doctorate in biotechnology in the US. He used to have 20 years of research in biotechnology abroad before returning home to set up a career.

With a passion and talent for research in pharmacology, pharmacology, and drug manufacturing technology, Dr. Ho Anthropology majors in biomedical science in the US and decided to live and work in Vietnam since 2006.

Growing up in New York, Mr. Ho Nhan said he earned a doctorate in biotechnology from the University of Arizona and cherished the dream of starting his own biotech company. He went to work as a hired worker to save money, then with a classmate he opened a company specializing in research and analysis services for pharmaceutical and chemical companies.

Up to now, Vietnam has 4 licensed units to research COVID-19 vaccines, namely the Institute of Vaccines and Medical Biologicals (IVAC), the No. Research on Production of Vaccines and Medical Biologicals (Polyvac) and Nanogen Pharmaceutical Biotechnology Co., Ltd.

In particular, Nanogen is the only private unit involved in the production of COVID-19 vaccine in Vietnam and also the earliest human vaccine trial unit. In 2008, when he returned to Vietnam for a long-term settlement, Mr. Ho Nhan opened a small laboratory in Tan Phu district, before moving the facility to the High-Tech Park of Ho Chi Minh City.

Going step by step from basic research, small investment, creating clinical trial products and then conducting large production investments, he continued to pour profits into research. Mr. Nhan said, Nanogen invested 40 million USD from personal money and borrowed from relatives and friends.

The company can now control over 90% of the basic steps in the process of making a biotech drug product, depending on the type. The remaining proportion, though small, for example some technological know-how, is paid for by the company to buy foreign research rights, usually from a few tens of thousands to several million US dollars.

Mr. Nhan's wife, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Van is also the director of Nanogen company. At the beginning of the company's establishment, Mr. Ho Nhan owned 70% of the company's shares. Mr. Nhan's wife holds 25% of the charter capital of Nanogen. The remaining shareholder owning 5% of the capital is Mr. Ho Vu Thanh.

However, after that, Mr. Ho Nhan and Ms. Hong Van's share ratio decreased to 67.5% and 22.5%, respectively, because foreign shareholders began to contribute capital to Nanogen. And Mr. Thanh divested all capital in this pharmaceutical company.

Before that, Hong Van also established with her mother and some other family members like her younger brother, Southeast Asia Education Development Investment Joint Stock Company (SEADI). This company is the owner of Duy Tan High School in Ho Chi Minh City. However, later, Hong Van decided to help her husband develop Nanogen, so he handed over SEADI to family members.

Up to now, when it comes to Mrs. Hong Van's family, it is possible to mention other prominent brands in many fields such as Son Kim Group, Son Kim Land (with high-class apartments Gateway, Nassim, Serenity Sky Villas, etc.) Metropolitan), Son Kim Mode (with brands VERA, JOCKEY, WOW), Son Kim Retails with joint venture brands with Korea (GS25, GSSHOP), with France (Jardin Des Sens, Mama Sens), with Japan (KYO WATAMI)...
