Dinh Thuy: Struggling to make a living, the show promoter had bad intentions, promised to promote but 'turned back'

Hua Nguyen Dinh Thuy was born in 2003 in Ca Mau. He just won first prize in the program "Unexpected transformation". Not only possessing a handsome appearance and a bright stage presence, the singer born in 2003 also impresses with his powerful voice.

Before winning the championship of Unexpected Transformation, Hua Nguyen Dinh Thuy had gone through many ups and downs to be able to continue living with his passion for singing.

Born into a family with parents who were prominent in the amateur music troupe in Ca Mau province, the 2003 singer was exposed to music from a young age and knew how to sing reformed opera since the age of 6.

However, when he reached puberty, his parents "went their separate ways", his family had financial difficulties, causing him to abandon his studies and singing career and have to work hard at the age of 16. This sometimes made the 2003 singer feel sad and sorry because his family was not as perfect as his peers.

"Sometimes I want to be spoiled. When I'm sick, I want my parents to take care of me but I can't. Sometimes I feel sad," he confided.

At that time, for Dinh Thuy, having money to cover living expenses was difficult and going back to school was a luxury.

While his peers were busy with their studies, the 2003-born boy had to go to Ho Chi Minh City to earn a living with many different jobs such as construction worker, hat sewing worker, coffee shop waiter...

Not long after, he was lucky enough to meet the owner of the coffee shop where he worked who offered to help and encouraged him to return to school to finish high school.

"He said: 'Why don't you go back to school? Who knows, maybe if you become famous in the future, people won't be able to say you didn't finish high school.'"

I also really wanted to go to school but didn't have the means. My boss offered to help me pay my tuition and I was determined to go back to school," the 21-year-old singer recounted.

Due to difficult family circumstances, in addition to studying, the champion of Unexpected Transformation also worked many different jobs to support himself.

By June 2024, he had just finished high school at the age of 21. Dinh Thuy also determined to take the entrance exam to the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music next school year.

Dinh Thuy disagrees with the notion that "talented artists don't care about education." He said: "I think that if you don't have the conditions to go to school, you can say that, but now that we have many conditions, I think we should go to school and gain knowledge, because studying is very important."

Not only in terms of education, Dinh Thuy's artistic career is also "bumpy".

Revealing his salary for a show, he said: "People pay me 100,000 VND per song or in some places a little more. And when I sing at parties, I get extra tips."

Not stopping there, in the process of pursuing her passion for singing, the 2003 singer was once harassed and forced into marriage by a show producer.

The champion of Unexpected Transformation 2024 said that during an invitation to perform in Da Lat in December 2023, during the meal, the show organizer kept mentioning the issue that "today's singers who want to be famous must have someone backing them up".

That same evening, at a party, he was forced to kiss this showman. "He put his arm around my shoulder, even though I had anticipated this, I was still very scared. Then he kissed me on the cheek and said, 'Now only I can take care of Thuy.'"

This is the first time in my life that I've been in this situation. I'm afraid that if I react strongly, it won't be good for tomorrow's performance, so I tried to get out with the excuse of making a phone call and left."

After the first unsuccessful attempt, this show manager also "played dirty" by spreading negative information, causing the young singer to struggle for a period of time due to severe psychological trauma.

Dinh Thuy said that if he met a powerful person right now who promised him a lot of property and cars, he would not accept the trade.

"Because I promised my parents that I would advance myself, not being famous or becoming a star was fine, as long as I could satisfy my passion for singing," he confided.

According to Dinh Thuy, the title of champion of Unexpected Transformation 2024 will be a big turning point for him to reach the audience in the future. The male singer from Ca Mau continues to pursue and develop the genres of modern music, old music and ballads.

Despite his young age, Dinh Thuy chooses a music genre that is more mature than his age. He said: "I sing music from the 8X and 9X generations because this music genre has been ingrained in my subconscious for a long time.

I find myself suitable and able to feel it. When I sing this genre of music, older audiences really appreciate it, because I still retain the beauty that is often forgotten by the times, and I feel very proud."

After being crowned, Dinh Thuy revealed that he will use the prize money to release some music products, as well as organize a mini show of his own.
