Horrific tragedy in Frankfurt: Twin brothers die, driver "high" on laughing gas flees
The tragic incident occurred at around 2:30 a.m. on July 6 on Mainzer LandstraÃe, Gallus district, Frankfurt, Germany. According to local media and Hessischer Rundfunk, a 23-year-old man driving a car suddenly drove into the bicycle lane and hit two electric scooters.
The result was the deaths of twins Nguyen Duy Q. and Nguyen Quang M., 23 years old. Both were international students from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, who came to Germany to study dental assistants at a clinic in Altona, Hamburg. A Vietnamese friend who accompanied them (TikToker Bop Foam, 27 years old) was also seriously injured and is in critical condition.
What is even more outrageous is that the driver fled the scene immediately after the accident. However, under pressure from public opinion and authorities, he turned himself in to the police that night. According to the initial investigation, the driver is believed to have inhaled "laughing gas" before driving, showing disregard for the law and the lives of others. The suspect is currently facing multiple charges of serious crimes, including manslaughter, attempted murder, causing serious injury, and leaving the scene of an accident.
The incident was made even more heartbreaking by the fact that a 24-year-old woman, the girlfriend of the victim Duy Q, was riding the third scooter. Although she was not directly hit, she was shocked to see the entire horrific incident unfold before her eyes. The psychological trauma may haunt her for a long time.
Journey home: Community joins hands to bring 2 unfortunate victims back to their hometown
After the tragic accident, Q. and M. were handed over by the Frankfurt Public Prosecutor's Office. Their families in Vietnam wanted to bring them back to Vietnam for burial according to their homeland's customs. However, the cost of transporting the bodies from Germany to Vietnam was too great a financial burden for the family, which could not afford it.
Faced with this difficult situation, a strong wave of sharing has emerged. Friends of the two brothers and especially the clinic where Q. - M. studied have launched a fundraising campaign on the Gofundme platform. The campaign aims to support the costs of bringing both of them back to Vietnam, so that they can rest in peace in their homeland.
The communityâs kindness was clearly demonstrated when, as of the evening of July 22, in just a short period of time, nearly 138,000 USD (equivalent to more than 3.5 billion VND) had been donated. This number is constantly increasing, showing the empathy and spirit of mutual love of Vietnamese people around the world.
Dr. Christina Essers, the clinic owner where Q. and M. trained, expressed her regret and affection for her two students: "I still remember clearly when they applied to us." Ms. Essers described them both as polite, idealistic, full of hope and ambition.
She added that the twins speak fluent German and have expressed a clear desire to live and work in Hamburg to build a solid career and help their relatives back home. "M. and Q. have given us so much. Now, we want to give them at least a small part in return," she said, expressing the clinic's deep connection and affection for the two unfortunate students.
Warm funeral in Hamburg and message about traffic safety
Before the bodies were brought back to Vietnam, on the morning of July 18, the funeral of the twin brothers took place at St. Petri Cathedral, Hamburg. The ceremony was presided over by Pastor Jörg Fenske (Evangelical Church of North Germany) and Pastor Duc Cuong Than (Vietnamese Evangelical Church in Hamburg).
So that the families of the two victims in Ho Chi Minh City could watch and say their final goodbyes from afar, the entire ceremony was recorded. The ceremony was an emotional memorial, where friends, teachers and community representatives came together to say their final farewells to the two unfortunate international students.
