Cong Thi Nghia (or Thu Trang) is known as the first beauty queen in Vietnam. The title of Miss pushed her to the big waves of life. But she persevered through it, thereby building a proud new life in the West.
Cong Thi Nghia or more familiar name is Thu Trang, she was born in 1932 in Hanoi. After finishing primary school, Ms. Nghia followed her family to Saigon to live. From an early age, she was passionate about writing and journalism, especially studying history.
At the age of 20, she joined the Viet Minh organization, with the task of being a spy in the inner city of Saigon. In July 1952, French secret agents suddenly discovered her role in the organization, she was detained at the Catinat station (now the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Ho Chi Minh City - Dong Khoi Street, District 1. ).
After serving her sentence at this station for a while, she was transferred to the Big Hospital - Saigon (now the General Library of Ho Chi Minh City - Ly Tu Trong Street, District 1). The days of her sentence were only ended when lawyer Nguyen Huu Tho defeated the judge in the trial for the crime she committed.
Released from prison, with the available capital, she attended a short course and started a career as a journalist, specializing in writing in the field of culture and art. She took the pseudonym Thu Trang - this is also the main pseudonym for all her historical writing and research pages.
In 1955, on the occasion of the anniversary of Hai Ba Trung, the Ngo Dinh Diem government announced that a beauty contest would be held at the Lido Cho Lon theater. Nearly all the beauties living in Saigon and the southern provinces appeared at this contest. Before that, there was no beauty contest named beauty contest in Vietnam - this can be considered the first beauty contest in our country.
The jury members of this contest include many personalities, intellectuals, journalists. During a visit to the jury to report news, some members of the jury advised her, "You are so beautiful, you should register for this contest". Hearing the invitation, she signed up to participate with the original purpose of... for fun.
Outstandingly overcoming a series of beauties, Ms. Thu Trang excellently crowned Miss. 1st runner-up belongs to Ms. Nguyen Thi Ninh, a Hanoi native who immigrated to the South and 2nd runner-up is Ms. Ngo Yen Thu, from Can Tho.
After achieving the noble title, she was invited to act in many films of Saigon at that time. In 1956, she took on roles in many films, such as We Want to Live (director Vinh Noan), Luc Van Tien (director Tong Ngoc Hap)...
In early 1957, she and director Tong Ngoc Hap brought the film Luc Van Tien to Japan for post-production. It is also here that the two develop feelings for each other. Then she got pregnant.
In her memoirs, she revealed in great detail about this unrequited love, she wrote: "It wasn't until the age of 25 that I became a woman in tragic circumstances. I was put into situations where I felt that I had failed. inevitable... I got pregnant in my first month in Tokyo.
We lived through the next tragedy when we arrived in Saigon at the end of 1957. It was a brutal storm that fell upon me as soon as I became a mother. Vietnamese society at that time was not at all forgiving for such events."
Returning to Vietnam in the fall of 1957, she was deeply shocked, because she was greeted at the airport by a furious crowd as she was nearing her due date. Simply, director Tong Ngoc Hap has a wife and children, so of course no wedding took place.
Despite that, she decided to be a single mother, naming her son after his father's surname - Tong Ngoc Van Tien to celebrate her tragic first love and has never let go of blame or demand. What is the responsibility of director Hap.
Although she was in the situation of "without a husband and pregnant", she was turned away by fans, but not so that her charm changed. There is a rumor that poet Bui Giang is very infatuated with her.
Writers and artists in Saigon must have guessed that Bui Giang's strange and famous verse in the poem Sad Eyes is: "With two eyes, crying for one child" is written about Cong Thi Nghia. "Crying for a child", ie feeling compassion for a woman with a child, has nothing to do with... eyeballs.
Poet Bui Giang also wrote many other poems for her, some published, some not. In the volume "Rain source" by poet Bui Giang, printed in 1962, he wrote to her as follows: "I don't know if the sky is round or distorted / Just today is today's beauty / I look up at the sky and send it to each other. fly/ Heaven over there/ Beauty over here".
She wrote in her memoirs about Bui Giang on a rainy day when he came to visit her, when the poet knew she was going to France. With the senses of a great artist, he knew that she was gone and would not come back. She wrote: "I was a little surprised to notice him looking down at the marble floor. Both were silent, I wanted to say something to make things right. Before he could, he bent down to pick up my green sandals. walking in the house next door, he picked it up and quietly opened the newspaper to pack the slippers. Then he stood up: I'm back!".
With law 10/59, Ngo Dinh Diem's government began the process of reviewing the crimes against all those who had participated in the revolution. Many former activists advised her to leave Saigon as soon as possible to avoid retaliation. In 1961, receiving an invitation to attend a film week in France, she left Saigon and settled permanently in this country.
In France, she did not participate in any artistic or cinematic activities. Instead, she returned to her maiden passions of writing and studying history. In 1978, she successfully defended the topic "Activities of Phan Chau Trinh" and became a doctor of history at the University of Paris VII. She also wrote many research books on the activities of many other revolutionaries. Her research has been printed into a book and translated into Vietnamese.
In the late afternoon, she was invited to lecture at many Vietnamese universities. For many reasons, she rarely reveals herself as Miss Thu Trang - Cong Thi Nghia. Colleagues and students mostly only know her as a doctorate in France. She is married to a French dentist named Marcel Gaspard and lives a happy and peaceful life.
