According to comedian Tan Beo, his parents are both from the West. His mother, artist Nhu Ngoc was born and raised in Dong Thap province. His father, artist Tan Tai, is from Vinh Trach commune, Nui Sap district, An Giang province.

Comedian Tan Beo's father was originally a village teacher who taught students in his hometown (Thoi Ngoc Hau school, An Giang province), but because he loved singing, he quit teaching to join a singing group.

The first singing group that artist Tan Tai followed was the group of manager Ba Ban, a small group in An Giang. Because of his beautiful voice, artist Tan Tai quickly became the lead singer and was invited by other troupes. From a small group, he sang for a large group then went to Saigon and became famous.

Artist Tan Tai's name really became famous after he received the gold medal at the Thanh Tam award in 1963 with artists Truong Anh Loan, Diep Lang, Thanh Tu, Bach Tuyet, Kim Loan (Mong Tuyen).

Thanh Tam Award is a prestigious award in Vietnamese Cai Luong theater, which existed for 10 years, from 1958 to 1968.

The award is named after the pen name Thanh Tam of journalist Tran Tan Quoc, also the founder of this award, with the hope of building a generation of talented and virtuous Cai Luong artists, wishing to eliminate more or less prejudice against the profession. singing.

After its debut, this award became prestigious in the theater industry. In addition to excellent singing and acting standards, the Thanh Tam award also requires ethical standards, so artists must always practice and strive.

The judging was also very strange, there was no competition taking place. The jury will watch all the operas of the year and choose good operas and good artists, then finally sit down and vote.

Because of this strange judging style, artists almost always have to be in a "competitive" position all year long, year after year. They even have to live very kindly, because just having a scandal will mean they will be eliminated from the tournament.

Talking about his parents, comedian Tan Beo said: "From the moment I knew it, all the artists loved my parents. Until the day my parents passed away, I had never heard a word about them. My parents are not jealous of anyone, they only protect them.

Later, I received that permission from my parents. When adults at my parents' time met me and knew I was the son of artist Tan Tai, they all loved me and helped me.

No one has ever said my father is a difficult artist. Everyone said he was as gentle as dough, an artist as gentle as dough. On stage he's very fierce, but in real life, no matter what anyone says, he smiles happily and never raises his voice at anyone."

Artist Tan Beo said that his mother had been in a theater group since childhood and was a famous actress in the West. The two met and built a love nest and in turn gave birth to three children, two boys and a girl.

In 1965, artist Tan Tai - Nhu Ngoc gave birth to his first son, named Pham Tan Danh, later known as comedian Tan Beo. Below is also artist Tan Bo and a married daughter, currently living in America.

In 1968, his parents founded a singing group called Tan Thu Do Tan Tai - Nhu Ngoc, which was famous in the South in the years before liberation.

In the 60s and 70s, artist Tan Tai made more than 400 Vong Co discs, Cai Luong operas and thousands of neoclassical songs.

In the late 60s, every day, he recorded 5-6 records and each record was priced at 12,000 VND, equivalent to an amount of gold at that time.

Tan Beo said: "At that time, I only listened to the radio and couldn't see the picture. Even now, many people still tell me that only when the radio is turned on can they hear Tan Tai sing.

They have all heard the reformed Tan Tai. They like my dad. That's something my family and I are very proud of. They only knew my father's name, not his face. When I know their faces, I love them even more.

Nowadays, there are still many songs sung by my father on the internet. Just type the name Tan Tai and it will come up. His songs are considered among the immortals of Vietnamese Cai Luong.

Later, life had many changes and upheavals, and in the last years of their lives, artist Tan Tai and Nhu Ngoc had to completely rely on their eldest son, Tan Beo.

Not only does Tan Beo take care of his parents, he also takes care of his two younger siblings.

In 2011, artist Tan Tai passed away at his home in Ho Chi Minh City because of a bile duct infection after a surgery not long ago.

People's Artist Le Thuy once shared when her male colleague passed away: "We had many beautiful memories together, from when we were young until late in the afternoon, with gray hair and still standing on stage.
