The accident of the tourist boat Blue Bay 58 that occurred on the afternoon of July 19 in Ha Long Bay, Quang Ninh province, shocked the whole country. As a result, 35 people died, 4 people were missing and 10 people were fortunately rescued.
While people across the country are looking towards Ha Long with deep sorrow, some individuals are taking advantage of this pain to attract views and likes using sophisticated tricks on social networks.
Among them, a photo of a group of children standing on the bow of the ship, originally a souvenir from 2024, was suddenly labeled as the "last moment" before the QN 7105 capsized. Some fanpages to attract likes widely shared the photo with a tragic description such as: "The fateful trip, the last image of the children...", making many people touched and shared it without verifying it.
The image quickly went viral, with many accounts intentionally editing it to black and white and adding mourning effects to increase interaction. In particular, a large fanpage received more than 160,000 likes and tens of thousands of mournful comments in just a few hours.
However, the truth was quickly revealed. Mr. NT - the real owner of the photo said that the photo was taken in August 2024, during a family trip to Ha Long, and was completely unrelated to the Green Bay 58 capsize. "When I saw the photo turned into a tool to attract views, I was really shocked. The children in the photo are only in middle and high school, and now many people mistakenly believe that they are victims of the Ha Long Bay capsize. My family is extremely worried and upset," Mr. T. shared.
Creating fake news to attract views - unpredictable consequences
According to lawyer Dao Thi Bich Lien (Ho Chi Minh City Bar Association), the act of posting and sharing false information about the Ha Long ship capsize can be strictly handled according to the law.
The act of spreading fake news on social networks, causing public confusion, is a violation of the 2018 Law on Cyber Security (Point d, Clause 1, Article 8). It clearly states that spreading false information that causes damage to society, affects public authorities or insults the honor and reputation of individuals is prohibited.
Depending on the severity of the violation, those who spread fake news can be fined from 5-10 million VND for individuals and from 10-20 million VND for organizations.
A singer made a fatal mistake
Like many others, singer Thai Thuy Linh also posted an article expressing her condolences to the victims of the capsized boat in Ha Long. Along with the emotional status, in the comment section, Thai Thuy Linh shared a photo of children standing on the cruise ship, believed to be the victims of the incident.
By the evening of July 21, the female singer had posted an apology and corrected the image in the above post as a mistake. Accordingly, the female singer expressed regret and sent a sincere apology to Mr. TN - the owner of the photo that was spread incorrectly. She admitted that at first she did not know the photo had the wrong source, just thought it was an image spread from the online community in the atmosphere of mourning. After realizing the mistake, Thai Thuy Linh immediately removed the comment containing the photo, proactively contacted and asked for permission to repost the photo with the correct information along with a public apology.
Thai Thuy Linh shared: "I completely understand the anger of the owner of the photo - Mr. TN when the photo he took of his relative from 2024 was widely spread with completely false content (he sent me the original photo he saved on his phone, with clear date, time and location), and in which I was one of the people who accidentally spread it in a comment.
With this article, I sincerely apologize to Mr. TN and his family for posting his photo of a relative, with a caption that caused a big and regrettable misunderstanding. I truly understand that, unlike other mistakes that we can sometimes encounter when using social networks, this mistake can cause great mental damage to the children in the photo and their relatives. I also hope that those who are using the photo incorrectly will withdraw and correct it!
Personally, I learned another lesson: be more careful when using information/images on social networks. Anything can happen, it can be unintentional, but there are also many people who intentionally take advantage of tragic events, and in emergency situations and emotions that exceed the normal threshold, it is easy to sympathize and believe it is true."
