Chillies Band: Hit Vietnamese Indie village, "caught the eye" of TG's largest record label

Chillies Band is one of the few bands in the Indie village that is extremely popular and loved by many audiences. The group has many hit songs such as Having You in Your Life Suddenly Happy, Mascara, Just Chill, Memory Zone ...

The Chillies are a successful group with indie music. The current lineup of the group consists of 4 members: Duy Khang is the lead vocalist songwriter, Nhem and Phuoc play guitar, Phu is the drummer. The members came from different regions, with a love of music they built a band together called Chillies.

Formed during a music event at Hard Rock Cafe Saigon, Chillies started by playing popular cover songs at familiar bars such as Yoko café or Acoustic Bar. From a little-known small band, the Chillies now have a large audience. Their music also has a certain influence in the music market today. Chillies - comes from the characteristic "chill" of the indie artist and accidentally when combined to create a special pungent spice. The Chillies play mainly Pop, Ballad and Rock genres.

However, what makes the Chillies stand out and different in the music market is the diversity. The Chillies' music has not focused on a single genre. The group also does not define the music genre they pursue as a fixed genre but always wants their products to have many diverse changes. The audience found no overlap of the Chillies themselves in their compositions. Chillies said: "Maybe we like to explore so we want to try things. What we want to do is that each of our songs is the most beautiful and different. It's like a limited priced item."

2019 is the year the Chillies put their name on the Vietnamese music map. Starting with the song "Who?", the Chillies immediately hypnotize listeners with the pulsating melody. The Chillies said the band's debut song was made just for their friends to hear and support. The group didn't think it would be so popular.

In July 2019, the group released the song Thank You and Apologize for the movie Dear My Mother. Later in the year, the Chillies hit hard again with mascara. Although it has just released the audio version, this song has a super listener. Later, the group released the music video for Mascara as a thank you of the band to the supportive audience.

The Chillies had an unexpectedly successful year, to the point where the group had a live show "Mascara" and a tour called "Symbiosis" that was packed with viewers. This is a live show to celebrate the release of the single "Mascara" as well as to thank fans for always accompanying them during the past time. With 21 performances in nearly 3 hours, Mascara took the audience through a wide range of emotions. Chillies - an unknown indie group has become an irreplaceable lipstick in the Vietnamese music picture.

In 2020, the Chillies released the songs "Have a Happy Life", "Memory Zone", "Just chill". The group's musical performance is still well maintained. The Chillies released the song Through the Window, paving the way for their debut studio album.

By Christmas 2020, the next single was titled If Only. This song shows a variety of styles, attracting listeners.

In March 2020, Chillies officially joined Warner Music Group (WMG) - one of the three largest record companies in the world, based in New York (USA). Artists under WMG's management include Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, Dua Lipa, Madonna, Coldplay, Twenty One Pilots, Jason Mraz, Cardi B, Jason Derulo, David Guetta,...

There are periods when Chillies feel stuck, uninspired. The longest is about half of 2022. I could barely think of anything. The things written are not satisfactory. Before that, it took the band about a month to write a song.

In early March 2023, the group released a 5-track EP On the Clouds with a familiar style: the words tell about a love story with sadness, catchy music that is a mix of different genres.

In parallel with the release of the new EP, the Chillies also held their live concert tour On the Clouds, estimated at 4,000 - 5,000 spectators per session in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. This is the second solo live show of the band formed in 2017. The show featured guests Vu., Grey D and Madihu.

Speaking of songwriting inspiration, for Chillies, songwriting is not a habit, it is impossible to force yourself to write many melodies and words a day. Suddenly, while working on something, the Chillies flashed an idea in their heads and stopped to think about it. Khang – the main composer – usually comes up with a sentence and sings in the most natural way. If it's good enough, the band will keep it for further writing. I often find inspiration in the shower and let my thoughts flow on its own.

Chillies uses music to tell stories that make people feel relaxed, like putting them on a comfortable sofa. The group hopes to soothe people's souls a little, not wanting the audience to strain their heads to think about the words, or put them in an awkward and confusing mood.

In an interview, Chillies once revealed that if he did not play music, he would like to follow the F&B industry, open a restaurant or café. You will go to chef school because you love to eat. For Phu, music is almost the only way. If he doesn't play the band, Phu is more likely to become a music teacher. Phuoc can study medicine, work as a pharmacist.
