From a melancholic ballad, Mochiii's "Withered Flower" unexpectedly became an international phenomenon thanks to its incredibly catchy remix. The song not only swept across China's Douyin but also created a food craze, attracting millions of views globally.
In recent days, Douyin users (the Chinese version of TikTok) have been constantly encountering a familiar yet fresh melody: "Like a sad play, I play both roles perfectly. To whom should I give my love...?" This is the catchy chorus of the Vietnamese song titled "Withered Flower Petals."
Interestingly, this song isn't just background music for typical dance cover videos. It has become the "soul" of a series of videos showcasing Vietnamese cuisine abroad. The steaming images of traditional pho, the vibrant colors of beef noodle soup, and the tempting banh mi are all interwoven with the song's lively remix. This combination of visual (delicious food) and auditory (great music) creates an irresistible appeal, attracting millions of views and tens of thousands of comments from international users.
Few people know that "Withered Flower Petals" was originally a melancholic ballad performed by young singer Mochiii (Nguyen Thi Thu Binh, born in 2000). When it was first released, the original version only achieved modest success with around 4 million views on YouTube – a number that wasn't particularly groundbreaking in the vibrant Vietnamese music market. Even when veteran singer Khanh Phuong covered it, the song still failed to create a truly significant impact.
However, the song's fate was completely transformed by the producers in the Mochiii x Domino Remix. Released in September 2024, this new remix breathed new life into the track: youthful, energetic, and incredibly catchy. To date, the remix has reached 44.6 million listens, far surpassing the original.
The remix's popularity isn't limited to Vietnam. On digital platforms, comments on the song are flooded with languages ranging from English, Thai, Chinese, and Korean to Malaysian. One enthusiastic Thai listener shared that the melody has become "an addictive drug" and he plans to play it throughout the upcoming Songkran festival.
Why can a Vietnamese song captivate Chinese or Thai listeners even if they don't understand a single word? The answer lies in its clever melody structure and arrangement.
Many international users admit they are captivated by the modern, slightly hypnotic yet easy-to-dance sound. A large segment of the audience initially didn't even realize it was Vietnamese music and frantically searched for the original version on various platforms. Upon finding Mochiii's ballad, they were surprised by the powerful and emotional vocals of the Gen Z singer, helping the original version also gain significant views after a long period of neglect.
Withered Petals is not the first name to make a splash in the world of over a billion people. Before that, Vietnamese music had already had incredibly successful "expeditions":
See Tình (Hoàng Thùy Linh): Becoming a global phenomenon, from Korean volleyball players to Chinese artists, everyone is performing this dance.
Easy Come, Easy Go (Quang Hung MasterD): It became such a sensation in Thailand and China that even A-list stars like Ju Jingyi and Hou Minghao had to cover it in Chinese.
If Only He Were Heartless or Because of Love, I'll Just Dive In (Min, Den, JustaTee): These songs are also constantly "reviving" on Douyin through new remixes, proving the enduring vitality of Vietnamese music when dressed in a modern remix style.
As of mid-April 2026, the melody of "Withered Flower Petals" remains firmly in the list of trending sounds. With these advancements, we have every right to expect that in the not-too-distant future, Vietnamese music will not only be isolated phenomena but will become a new "force" on the regional and international music map.
