Ancient tombs contain many valuable objects, but grave robbers never dare to take these two things.

Tomb thieves are most afraid of these two things

In ancient times, China had a funeral custom of custom burial, meaning that the dead would be buried with a lot of gold, silver, jewels, bronze, ceramics, etc. These objects are inherently valuable. large, over time, they become antiques, so the value can be tens, even hundreds of times. Therefore, grave theft occurs when many ancient tombs are excavated and violated just for the bad guys to take away valuable objects for their own profit.

Many ancient Chinese tombs have been stolen or even destroyed. Even Empress Dowager Cixi's tomb was once robbed. However, there are two things that are not small in value, but grave robbers never dare to take them away: coins and jade. Many years ago, the tombs of the kings of the Western Han Dynasty were stolen, almost all the artifacts inside were stolen, but nearly 10 tons of coins are still in place. This is actually for a reason.

Firstly, coins in ancient tombs, although considered antiques, are of very low value because they are no longer circulating on the market. The minting method of each era is different, so it is almost worthless to steal coins from a previous era to this era.

Secondly, the transportation of coins is really hard, not convenient for grave thieves. Coins for burial are usually very low in denominations and in large quantities, possibly up to a ton, making it impossible to transport such heavy and numerous coins.

Third, taking these coins out could put grave robbers at risk. In ancient times, people did not collect ancient coins, so this can be considered as evidence of tomb theft. Meanwhile, coins always have clear chronological characteristics, which are easy to recognize. Those with ancient coins meant they were involved in grave robberies and would attract investigation by the court and officials. Therefore, for their own safety, grave robbers did not dare to take the ancient coins.

Besides, the coins in the ancient tombs are also considered as money of the deceased brought to the underworld. If these coins are taken away, the deceased can't go to the royal spring, can return to take revenge, so grave robbers always avoid taking them.

In addition to coins, jade is also something many grave robbers do not want to steal. The reason is because ancient people were very superstitious, thinking that the jade pendant of the dead would become a blood jade, capable of sucking human blood, so no one dared to touch it to avoid bringing harm to the body.

Excavation of 2500-year-old remains uncovers what scares grave robbers

Recently, archaeologists have dug a tomb with two sets of remains of a man and a woman on the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt. These two sets of remains were buried in two different tombs, laid to rest in a coffin made of limestone, dating from about 2,500 years ago.

This discovery was conducted by experts from the University of Barcelona (Spain). They said the two tombs date from the Saite period, Egypt's 26th dynasty, The National News reported.

After excavating two tombs, archaeologists found that the man's tomb was quite well preserved. The man's grave, which has been sealed, contains a number of artifacts including canopic jars, a scarab beetle and figurines of deities.

However, the woman's grave was not so lucky. When found, this grave was not intact and there were many indications that her grave had been trespassed by grave robbers.

The most surprising thing is that when studying the two sets of remains, the scientists opened their mouths and were surprised to discover inside was a gold false tongue. Both the man's and the woman's two gold prostheses are in good condition. This is what is commonly found in the mouths of ancient Egyptian skeletons.

According to the ancient Egyptian belief, placing a gold prosthetic tongue in the mouth of the dead during the funeral can help the soul of that person talk to the god Osiris in the afterlife. They claim that Osiris rules the underworld and will judge the souls of the dead. This golden prosthetic tongue also allows the deceased to convince Osiris to show mercy to their souls.

What's more, this golden false tongue is the terror of grave robbers. The woman's grave was breached, but the grave robbers did not dare to touch the golden tongue in her mouth, because they were afraid of offending the gods.

Experts speculate that after the man and woman died, the embalmers cut off their tongues, then put the gold prosthetic tongue in their mouths during the burial ceremony.

Archaeologists say they have not been able to determine the exact identities of the man and woman, but that their tombs were built adjacent to each other.

The man's skull is well preserved and a gold prosthetic tongue protruding from his mouth is clearly visible. The man's grave is also almost intact after being buried more than 2,500 years ago, including a lot of artifacts. Archaeologists have found 402 Ushabti figurines made of crockery - a type of tin-glazed earthenware, along with a small set of amulets and green beads inside the man's grave.
