Not long ago, according to Korea Time (KST), the newly formed girl group, BADVILLAIN, produced by Big Planet Made, made headlines in the music industry with the release of their debut album "OVERSTEP" and the music video for the title track.
Earlier at 0:00 on April 4, Big Planet Made changed the company's social media profile picture to the "BadVillain" logo, attracting the attention of the public. There is a lot of speculation that BadVillain is the name of the company's new girl group.
Big Planet Made is home to many famous artists such as girl group Viviz, singer Huh Gak, Ha Sung-woon, Lee Mu-jin, rapper BE'O, choreographer Kasper, Kany, and most recently signed comedian Lee Su-geun and SHINee member Taemin, expanding the company's scale.
According to available information, BADVILLAIN is a debut girl group consisting of 7 members Emma Song, Chloe, Kim Inhye, Kim Yunseo, Choi Sobin, Ha Seoyeon and an undisclosed name. Their first single, also titled "BADVILLAIN", was a dance track that highlighted the diverse charm of the members. The song conveys the message of liberation, encouraging people to pursue their own goals and desires rather than living under the scrutiny of others.
Recently, plagiarism has become a "hot" issue in Kpop, after internal conflicts between HYBE Group and its subsidiary ADOR exploded. CEO Min Hee Jin has openly criticized ILLIT for plagiarizing NewJeans in many aspects of ideas, images... Since then, there have been constant controversies about plagiarism being discussed.
BADVILLAIN is scheduled to debut in June and has soon posted videos and images revealing the lineup of the members. But right from the opening teaser video released in April, netizens commented that this video of BADVILLAIN has similarities with Baby Monster's first introductory poster revealed in January 2023.
The two groups used a black shadow image on a red background to reveal the number of members. BADVILLAIN's logo is commented to be a reference to the idea of Baby Monster and G-Dragon (who used to be both artists of YG Entertainment).
Some viewers criticized that the black-red color scheme was used in many other artists of Big Planet Made, such as the group VIVIZ, so it is impossible to conclude that BADVILLAIN plagiarized Baby Monster.
However, in May, when BADVILLAIN continued to release a detailed member introduction video, more similarities were "revealed", such as the layout of the trailer, colors, and even the music used are very similar.
The culmination was a series of official photos of the group released on May 26. BADVILLAIN wore denim outfits, taking pictures on a white background. This style is very similar to the Baby Monster photo series released after Ahyeon reappeared.
Many people think that BADVILLAIN seems to have used unhealthy promotional "tricks", taking advantage of the image and popularity of Baby Monster - a group from a big company (YG Entertainment), to attract attention before debuting.
In the competitive K-pop industry, groups that come from small companies will not have the same advantage as groups that debut from large companies. If music doesn't really explode and has nothing special, they will soon be eliminated.
However, plagiarism is a sensitive issue of Kpop at the moment. So, if BADVILLAIN really plagiarizes Baby Monster to get attention, this is a pretty risky strategy. The lesson is that the ILLIT group was turned away by many viewers because of the NewJeans plagiarism controversy.
Although there is not much information, BADVILLAIN soon attracted attention thanks to the video showing the uniform skills of the members. In the midst of K-pop girl groups constantly controversing about their skills, BADVILLAIN initially ensured two aspects of choreography and stage presence.
In particular, with the participation of Emma Song - a professional dancer who came out of Street Woman Fighter, BADVILLAIN is predicted to be a music group that develops choreography. Only in the first video, the group showed extreme dance moves, making people unable to take their eyes off. Many Kpop fans are excited, affirming that Emma Song will be the "god of war" who threatens Kpop if only in terms of choreography.
BADVILLAIN and Emma Song are most likely to be serious opponents of the female rookie of The Black Label. According to many sources, Bailey Sok - the famous choreographer of many popular music groups will be a piece of the group "Teddy's daughter".
Switching from dancer to idol, Emma Song is expected to make a difference. The girl born in 2000, who participated in Street Woman Fighter season 1 with the dance group WANT, is one of the hottest factors in the show. Decisive dance moves, strong movements and high-level facial expressions are her strengths.
Famous from Street Woman Fighter, Emma Song was involved in a legal dispute with her former company in 2021 because she unilaterally terminated the contract. Because of this scandal, the female dancer took a long time to come to the public. Finally pursuing their idol dreams, fans are extremely happy and excited to wait for the day Emma Song debuts.
