VTV 's recent 'slip of the tongue' incidents have become a hot topic of discussion on social media. Notably, among the once-loved editors, Nguyen Anh Quang, has almost had to go into hiding after the incident of calling a street vendor a 'parasite'.
In the Financial News program broadcast on August 17 on VTV1, MC Nguyen Anh Quang caused controversy when he compared street vendors in Ho Chi Minh City during the Covid-19 pandemic to "parasites".
Original text of the editorial of Vietnam Television: "The Covid-19 epidemic has made the tourist streets or mainly serving foreign visitors in Ho Chi Minh City become desolate. When the streets are no longer alive, how will the street vendors - who are considered to be parasitic on these streets - survive?".
This statement immediately received mixed reactions. The term parasite is used to refer to organisms that depend on other living organisms to survive. Viewers said that the station's editor's use of this term was inappropriate and insulting to street vendors.
Regarding the incident, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Luong - Deputy General Director of VTV said that he would review the news. In addition, he also affirmed that the wording used by BTV Anh Quang was incorrect.
As for BTV Anh Quang, after the news was broadcast and received mixed opinions, he also apologized: "First of all, I would like to apologize to the viewers who watched the 'Finance and Business' news on the morning of August 17, 2020 on VTV1 channel and the street vendors on the streets of Ho Chi Minh City.
While presenting the news this morning about the story of street vendors making a living in Ho Chi Minh City during the Covid-19 pandemic, due to carelessness, I misread a sentence, causing the TV audience to misunderstand the content being conveyed, causing unnecessary negative reactions.
This is entirely my personal mistake in the process of conveying information to the audience. While the content of the report is a shared perspective, sympathizing with the street vendors who struggle to make a living, there is no intention of any contempt. I have personally written a report and accepted the forms of disciplinary action from the agency. Once again, I hope to receive the forgiveness of the audience."
BTV Anh Quang's sharing quickly attracted great attention. Besides some opinions expressing that they still could not accept this mistake, many people sympathized with him because they thought that professional mistakes are inevitable. The important thing is that they recognized it and promptly apologized to the audience. After the apology, BTV Anh Quang has now locked his personal Facebook page. His action is considered to avoid further criticism.
However, after a while, this account was active again but there were no new updates, except for challenging posts like: "After a long time the story has calmed down, I apologize to everyone for letting me learn from my experience, but the word parasite is not wrong!". This made netizens suspect that the account had been hacked.
Before and after this event, very little press and media information recorded other outstanding professional activities of Editor Nguyen Anh Quang. He mainly worked behind the scenes of the news, rarely appearing on interview programs or talk shows like many other veteran editors of VTV.
This makes his image more associated with professional incidents than other television products.
Nguyen Anh Quang is a television editor of Vietnam Television, taking on the role of leading and editing the Finance - Business news broadcast on VTV1 channel. Through the television lens, Quang has a mature presenting style, conveying news content in a concise, clear tone, targeting audiences interested in national economic and financial issues.
Although not a long-time contributor to political news like editors Hoai Anh or Van Anh, Quang has gradually affirmed his ability through the news he is in charge of, which is considered a special news with high professional content, providing a modern business and market perspective.
Unforgettable slips of the tongue of famous MCs/BTVs
Talking about the 'slip of the tongue' incident, this is not the first time in history that National Television has been embroiled in controversy on social networks.
At the end of July 2019, MC Minh Hang of the show Happy Lunch was heavily criticized for her inappropriate statement.
Specifically, in the chat section, when the MC asked: "Who is the messiest person?", the two guests, K-ICM and Jack , both answered that no one was messy. Immediately, the female MC innocently commented that the two boys were "rare animals that need to be preserved".
Although K-ICM and Jack both seemed quite comfortable with this comment, netizens thought that the female MC's comment was "inappropriate" and insulting to others.
The MC's careless statement made the audience extremely upset, and they visited Minh Hang's personal page and the program's fanpage.
MC Truong Viet Phong is accused of satirizing Huong Giang.
While the online community was amazed by the love story from Who is that person between Huong Giang and CEO Matt Liu, MC Viet Phong caused controversy when he said that "a transgender man telling purebred women how to keep a man" was wrong and very strange.
Although he did not mention her name, many people guessed that he was referring to Huong Giang. Immediately, fans of the transgender beauty queen criticized the male MC because they thought he was trying to satirize their idol.
In the face of fierce criticism, Viet Phong deleted the post but he affirmed that he still maintained his old stance. The reason the male MC removed the previous post was because he received advice from everyone, and also to avoid inappropriate interactions, not because he felt he was wrong.
"I don't want to comment on things that we don't understand each other. Personally, I still hold the view that things are for women and as a woman, it is better to share experiences with other women as a woman.
As for 'purebred women', it's just a way of speaking, I don't use it in my articles. I've done a lot of reporting on the LGBT community, so I understand a lot about the terminology and language when writing about them. However, because it's so sensitive, the level of interaction is both positive and negative.
I don't hate you guys in the community, especially trans guys. Surely a word or a status doesn't clarify the issue and between strangers, it doesn't matter if it's good or bad, just swear.
I do a lot of media work on this issue so I am not too worried or bothered. But also because some seniors shared and told me to lock it, I locked it, when there are so many conflicting opinions like that!
As for Huong Giang, I have always recognized her as a person with a beautiful identity, the depth behind the pain of changing her appearance to become who she is now. A woman after transgender! She attracts others from a TV show because of her depth and certain level of life experience, not because she is an experienced woman."
