Most recently, "Yoo Ah In and Kim Ho Joong's prison meal" has become a controversial topic on Korean social networks.
Yoo Ah In is currently serving a one-year prison sentence for using 'drugs' at the Seoul Detention Center. Meanwhile, trot singer Kim Ho Joong is being held in solitary confinement pending his trial. Newsis has detailed the meals of these two special prisoners during the Chuseok (Mid-Autumn Festival) holiday.
Breakfast will include bread, jam, soup, boiled eggs and soy milk. Lunch will be traditional Korean dishes such as potato soup, stir-fried squid, corn salad and kimchi. Dinner will include soybean paste soup, gondre rice with sauce, seaweed and kimchi. Seoul Prison confirmed that prisoners will be served special meals during the biggest holiday of the year, but the specific dishes have not been revealed. Last year, prisoners were served traditional Gangjeong rice cakes.
The news immediately sparked outrage among Korean netizens. Many questioned why criminals were treated in good conditions, given delicious meals, and allowed to watch TV. Many netizens felt that the resources should be allocated to more worthy purposes, such as helping poor children.
On social networking sites, Korean netizens constantly criticized: "The food is so delicious?", "Make them work to earn a living, why is the prison meal so delicious?", "Why treat criminals so well? That money should be used to feed starving children", "Let them starve so they can repent for their crimes", "Why not focus on the victims?".
On September 3, Yoo Ah In was convicted of violating the Drug Control Act and inciting the destruction of evidence. The punishment for the "King of Movies" is 1 year in prison, a fine of 2 million won (VND 37 million), and was arrested immediately after the verdict. In addition, Yoo Ah In was forced to participate in an 80-hour drug rehabilitation education program and an additional fine of 1.54 million won (VND 28.5 million).
During the trial, the prosecution said the reason for the sentence was that the actor regularly purchased illegal medical 'drugs' worth about $361,000 by deceiving doctors. He did this based on his wealth and professional status.
"As a celebrity who has made influential public statements on social issues, he must bear great social responsibility. He used his influence to cover up crimes, silence people, facilitate acquaintances to flee abroad, and disregard the Korean justice system," the prosecutor said.
Meanwhile, the Hellbound star's lawyer admitted that he injected propofol but argued that it was a drug used to treat mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety disorders and sleep disorders. Yoo Ah In himself later apologized and bowed before the court: "I apologize for my mistakes related to this incident. I sincerely apologize to my family, colleagues and fans for causing them pain and suffering due to my wrongdoings."
Trot singer Kim Ho Joong is currently in custody at the Seoul Detention Center awaiting trial. Kim Ho Joong faces a three-year prison sentence for hit-and-run driving, having someone else take the blame, and attempting to destroy evidence. The singer is being held in solitary confinement in a 5.05-square-meter room with a toilet, sink, bedding, and television. Kim Ho Joong is allowed to watch television from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. He is also said to eat special meals that are not available in prison.
