To pay homage to the deceased, people cleverly built an airstrip so that when planes land, they will not pass over this grave location. When sitting on an airplane, passengers and pilots can see them very clearly.
Previous development projects sometimes encroached on old land, including cemeteries. In such cases, graves can be dug up and moved to a new cemetery. But there are also cases where families refuse to move their ancestors' graves, forcing local authorities to build structures next to the graves.
There are many strange and scary airports in the world that challenge the bravery of pilots. Among the strange events that humanity has ever heard of is the existence of two mysterious graves in the middle of the runway of the international airport. Why don't people move these two graves to another place but keep them on the runway, blocking traffic?
It is known that the exact location of the two most miraculous tombs in the world is on runway 10 of Savannah International Airport in the state of Georgia, USA. Any passenger arriving at Georgia's Savannah International Airport will be surprised to see two cement graves placed near the runway as well as the special story about its origin.
According to Atlasobscura, in the 1980s, authorities expanded several runways at Savannah International Airport. However, in the process of expanding the runway, local authorities encountered some obstacles.
Like many airports across the United States, Savannah Airport was built on old agricultural land to create a long and wide runway, convenient for aircraft takeoff and landing. The problem is that on this agricultural land there are often graves of farmer families buried on their land. When construction first started, on this agricultural land there were hundreds of large and small graves with many different designs.
According to research, this is the cemetery land of a famous landowner family in the area in the 19th century. The graves appearing on this land may belong to the ancestors of the family, or may also be The graves of slaves and servants - those who worked and died in the rich family's premises. In general, this is not a big problem because the government only needs to spend money to move the graves into a modern cemetery with the consent of the families.
However, at that time, the management unit encountered fierce resistance from Dotson family descendants. The Dotson family's land in the area that needs to be expanded has more than 100 graves. The graves of Mr. Richard (died in 1884) and Mrs. Catherine Dotson (died in 1877), farmers who explored the land, are located near runway number 10. Their descendants do not allow the two graves to be moved. because they thought that their grandparents did not want to leave the land that they had worked hard to buy and spent their entire lives there.
The end of war. The military airport was converted into a civil airport. The new airport was established around the 1960s. In addition, many neighboring lands were acquired by the government to expand the airport area. By 1970, the two graves still remained in place. Because federal law prohibits the removal of graves without relatives' permission, airport authorities decided to leave the graves intact, even though the two structures are located in the middle of the runway.
After trying unsuccessfully to convince the family, the authorities poured cement into the two graves, used stones engraved with names to mark them, then poured plastic around and smoothed it along with the runway. That is the location where the plane lands and passes over but does not pass over. And especially, both pilots and passengers on the flight can see them.
Relatives of Mr. and Mrs. Dotson can still visit the couple's ministry but must make prior arrangements and have an escort to ensure safety and of course, they cannot place flowers on the grave.
The airport representative said these graves are "the only graves in the world placed in a nearly 3km long runway". Every day, hundreds of flights take off and land on runway number 10, but not everyone knows about the presence of these two special tombs.
According to The State, regional airline captain Lisa Ruedy wrote on the All Things Aero website: "Pilots often tell each other that if you land right after sunset, those two will appear." present along the northern side of the runway". However, that is just a rumor and has no basis or clear evidence.
This is not the only airport with graves on the runway. Mathis Airport in Georgia, USA, now closed, is an airport that also has a series of graves located right on the runway.
These graves belong to the Anglin family. In 1960, the Anglin family allowed airport authorities to build a runway over the graves of family members. Accordingly, about 16 to 20 people from the Anglin family are currently "lying" under the runway.
