Y Thanh: Male singer invited to perform by Andy Lau, current life is full of surprises

At the age of over 50, singer Y Thanh said the most memorable moment in his life was performing with Asian star Andy Lau in 1998. Because that event helped bring the name Y Thanh closer to the audience.

Y Thanh, whose real name is Thoi Cam Thanh, was born in Sa Dec (Dong Thap) but grew up in the land of kangaroos since grade 7. In 1985, Y Thanh's father passed away. His aunt sponsored Y Thanh to Australia. 10 days before the flight, his aunt suddenly passed away from a heart attack. In Australia, Y Thanh lived with her uncle, the husband of her deceased aunt. The family affection in a foreign land therefore became somewhat "cold".

The childhood years of this Vietnamese boy were not easy. In order not to upset his mother, after finishing high school, Y Thanh chose to study at La Trobe University, majoring in Health Management and spent 10 years working at a hospital in Australia. However, the passion for music never stopped burning in Y Thanh's heart.

It was not until 1999, after his mother passed away, that Y Thanh had the courage to pursue his childhood dream of art. For a young Asian like Y Thanh, opportunities to work in the arts in Australia were very limited. Therefore, he studied singing, dancing and acting to have more opportunities when participating in casting for art projects in this country. "Simply put, when you know how to dance, sing and act, you will get more jobs and have an easier time casting," Y Thanh shared.

After much effort, the name Y Thanh is also known to many people in the international market. He participated in the famous musical "Miss Saigon" in the US. He also had the opportunity to act in TV series in Australia: Strange Bedfellows, Marshal Law... In particular, in 1998, he was invited to participate in the show of Hong Kong star Andy Lau and toured many countries around the world.

In 2009, Y Thanh decided to move back to Vietnam to work. He confided: "Before I decided to return to Vietnam, my parents had passed away. Only when they passed away did I have the courage to pursue the career I love. Before that, I did the job my parents wanted so they wouldn't be sad."

When he first returned to Vietnam, Y Thanh encountered many difficulties because he had no connections and did not understand the domestic music market. However, opportunities kept coming to Y Thanh.

He said: "When I returned to Vietnam, I did not intentionally look for an art job. When I first returned, because I was starting from zero, I looked for a job. Any job was fine, from teaching English, being an interpreter to teaching dance at schools and clubs. After that, I was invited to be a judge on the program Brighten Up Life with Ms. Hong Nhung and MC Anh Tuan.

Before that, in 2000, I had the opportunity to return to Vietnam and meet musician Do Quang. At that time, musician Do Quang was managing the band 1088. The band was preparing to release their first song and perform in the final night of a beauty pageant. I was invited by musician Do Quang to choreograph this song, and from then on, I became known to everyone."

In 2019, Y Thanh organized the music night La vie en rose to celebrate 20 years of singing with guests diva Hong Nhung and singer Pha Le. He has been a consultant for the programs: Music and Dance, X-Factor... choreographer for Vietnam Idol, So you think you can dance and hot seat for many other music programs.

However, the name Y Thanh is still quite "obscure" to the public. Sharing about this, he said: "I am sad. I am sad not because I am not famous, not because people do not know me much, but because people do not know me as a singer, even though I have been singing for more than 20 years. In Vietnamese showbiz, my name is more associated with choreography than with the role of singer".

Although not a famous singer, Y Thanh is very in demand. He sings every day and can make a comfortable living from his art without having to do a side job.

Singer Y Thanh has just released the song Maybe I Was Wrong with 3 versions. Through the new product, he hopes to convey the love story between a successful businessman and a young artist that he has witnessed. The male singer strives to bring a neat image in the MV as a way to show his respect for the audience.

Regarding his current life, Y Thanh said that in addition to singing, he also does business and is currently the director of an event organization company: "Currently, I often sing live at many venues, so my main income still comes from singing. Thanks to that, I have enough to cover my living expenses, but to make great music products is quite difficult because it requires a huge amount of money."

When asked about not being known by many audiences after more than 2 decades of artistic activities, the male singer said that he sometimes felt sad because he had not achieved what he wanted: "Many times I tried very hard but the results were not as expected. I hope to have a really explosive product that can reach more audiences."

When asked about his intention to participate in TV shows to seek fame, Y Thanh admitted that he was afraid of "survival" game shows. Because he thought that if he was eliminated early, the audience would judge him.
