Vo Ha Linh faced a wave of criticism when her Gammaphil cleanser advertisement video was withdrawn. She hid the video and spoke up to explain, causing much controversy in the online community about the responsibility of celebrities when promoting products.
Recently, information from the Drug Administration of Vietnam (Ministry of Health) has caused a stir in the beauty community and consumers. Specifically, the Department has requested the nationwide recall and destruction of a batch of Gammaphil specialized facial cleanser - 125ml bottle (Lot number: GMPA010524; Manufacturing date: 02/05/2024; Expiry date: 02/05/2027). The reason given is that the sample of this product contains Methylparaben and Propylparaben, while the product declaration form does not contain these two ingredients.
This information is particularly noteworthy because this is the product that was widely reviewed by famous YouTuber Vo Ha Linh, trusted and praised by millions of people as "true love", "benign" and even confirmed as "recommended by dermatologists". The incident not only caused confusion about the quality of the product but also raised big questions about the responsibility of KOLs in verifying information before reviewing, although Ha Linh quickly spoke up to explain.
"Paraben-free" or "deceptive": Ha Linh's claim "contradicts" the test results!
Although Vo Ha Linh's original video about Gammaphil is no longer available on her YouTube channel, clips from this clip, as early as March 2023, are still going viral on TikTok and other social media platforms. Notably, in these clips, Ha Linh described Gammaphil as a product "suitable for sensitive skin, acne-prone skin" and specifically emphasized that the product "does not contain parabens" - a claim that is completely contrary to the test results from the Drug Administration.
She also strongly asserted that the dermatologist prescribed this product and that Gammaphil "played a huge role in the acne treatment process", gently cleansing and soothing the skin extremely well when combined with acne medication. Ha Linh even "boldly" compared Gammaphil as "the perfect dupe of Cetaphil but at a more reasonable price", making consumers trust and rush to buy. Because of the "winged" words and "guarantee" from a highly influential YouTuber, this incident has caused a strong wave of indignation in the community.
Vo Ha Linh "counterattacks": "Do not accept bookings", "information based on old packaging"?
Under pressure from public opinion, Vo Ha Linh quickly responded. In a recent announcement, the "livestream warrior" affirmed that she did not receive any advertising or bookings from the Gammaphil brand. Instead, she bought the product herself to experience and review as a consumer. This is a key point that Ha Linh wants to clarify to protect her personal reputation.
The female Tiktoker also added that in her video content, she clearly stated the advantages and disadvantages of the product. In particular, the information about the ingredients as well as the "paraben-free" content she shared was accurate based on the information printed on the 500ml product packaging at the time of February 2022. This, according to Ha Linh, is different from the packaging of the 125ml product batch (batch number GMPA010524, manufactured on May 2, 2024, expiry date on May 2, 2027) that was recently recalled due to containing Methylparaben and Propylparaben - not included in the declaration form.
"The video aired in January 2022 has been more than 3 years old, the product is not part of the recalled product batch produced in May 2024. If you have problems with the product after using it, please contact the team right on the homepage for support," she added, to reassure consumers who have used the product according to her review.
Regarding hiding the previous Gammaphil promotional video, Vo Ha Linh explained that she wanted to "block old information from being recommended to viewers in an incomplete way", to avoid misleading new viewers who may not understand the time context of the review video.
The Gammaphil recall raises concerns about liability when heavily advertised products have misleading ingredients. This is a valuable lesson for KOLs to verify information carefully, especially about sensitive ingredients. The incident emphasizes the importance of information transparency and consumer vigilance.
