When mentioning classic works of Chinese television, one cannot overlook "Princess Huanzhu." Not only did it achieve record-breaking ratings, but it also propelled its then-young cast to A-list stardom.
Upon its broadcast, "Princess Huanzhu" quickly became a popular culture phenomenon. The two on-screen couples, Zhao Wei and Su Youbeng, and Lin Xinru and Zhou Jie, both amassed large fan bases. The image of the gentle Xia Ziwei and the devoted Er Kang captivated audiences, becoming cherished childhood memories for many generations.
However, few would have guessed that behind those romantic scenes lurked underlying conflict. In 2004, while participating in the show "Kang Xi Comes to Town," Lin Xinru unexpectedly shared about her unpleasant experience filming a kissing scene with a male co-star. She said that he "intentionally used his tongue during the kiss," which startled her, but she didn't dare react because she was young and inexperienced.
Although she didn't name names, Lin Xinru's descriptions quickly drew the attention of the media and audience to Zhou Jie – her co-star in the film. In particular, "Princess Huanzhu" featured many romantic scenes between the two characters, some of which were considered quite daring by the standards of the time.
Following this statement, Zhou Jie's reputation was severely damaged. He was labeled as someone with rude behavior, even harassing his co-stars. The actor's image quickly collapsed in the eyes of the public. Adding to this were personal scandals, especially the controversial traffic accident, which caused Zhou Jie's career to gradually decline, forcing him to leave the entertainment industry and return to his hometown to become a farmer.
It wasn't until 2017 that the story unexpectedly resurfaced when Zhou Jie publicly refuted the allegations on social media. The actor completely denied the "forced kiss" accusation, claiming it was a fabrication. He expressed his anger, even criticizing Lin Xinru for being hypocritical and trying to build a "saintly" image in front of the public.
Under pressure from public opinion and strong reactions from Zhou Jie, Lin Xinru later spoke out to explain. She stated that when she was young, she lacked acting experience and was too nervous when performing the kissing scene. "Perhaps because I was too sensitive, I reacted that way," the actress shared, while emphasizing that it was just work.
Despite his apology, the incident nearly ruined Zhou Jie's career. From a promising actor, Zhou Jie was ostracized and became a name on the fringes of showbiz. Meanwhile, Lin Xinru continued to maintain her position in the entertainment industry, although her image was also affected. In mainland China, the actress repeatedly faced waves of criticism, being accused of "playing the victim" and having an inconsistent attitude.
Recently, the controversy resurfaced when the Global Times published old images from the film. In them, Zhou Jie was criticized for his overly forceful acting, hugging Lin Xinru's neck so tightly that it made her uncomfortable. Some opinions suggest that the actor's exaggerated and overly immersive acting style may have made his co-star uncomfortable, especially a young actress like Lin Xinru at the time.
However, some argue that Zhou Jie was unaware of the problems in his acting, leading to prolonged misunderstandings and conflicts. Furthermore, his involvement in numerous other scandals also contributed to his tarnished public image.
