The tragic fate of "Golden Needle": When the artwork defies the ban. Although Zhao Wei was directly in charge of this project, her name was removed from the director's position on the poster and in official information.
After being shelved for 10 years due to behind-the-scenes controversies, the detective drama "Kim Châm Mật" (Golden Needle Secret) has finally set its release date for March 28th. The biggest highlight that makes this project highly anticipated is its impressive cast of strong female actors, including Yuan Quan, Ning Jing, Yu Fei Hong, Chen Chong, and Qi Xi, along with the appearance of actor Jing Luo.
It can be said that the appeal of "Kim Châm Mật" comes not only from the quality of its content but also from the thrilling "resurrection" story of this work after many ups and downs for the production team.
In June 2016, when Zhao Wei cheerfully announced the completion of her second directorial project, no one could have imagined that it would take a full 10 years for audiences to see this work on the big screen – but under a completely different title. Once expected to be an artistic "blockbuster" following the success of "So Young," the film, originally titled "No Other Love," finished filming in the summer of 2016.
The tragedy of the work began just one month after filming wrapped in 2016. The male lead, Dai Li Ren, unexpectedly became the focus of sensitive political controversies, forcing the production team to make a costly decision: replacing the entire role with actor Jing Luo. This "damage control" process dragged on for many years to complete the additional scenes.
However, the real blow came on the evening of August 26, 2021. Zhao Wei was officially listed as a "problematic artist." In just one night, the illustrious career of "Little Swallow" was almost wiped out from digital platforms in China without any official explanation. Although the reason remains a mystery, speculation about financial irregularities involving her and her ex-husband Huang Youlong has cast a dark shadow over the fate of the drama for the past half-decade.
Seemingly destined for the archives forever, "The Golden Needle" unexpectedly set a release date, creating a media frenzy in early 2026. The film's appeal stems not only from its unique female-led detective theme or haunting trailer, but also from speculation surrounding Zhao Wei's artistic future. Typically, films starring banned artists struggle to pass censorship, so this event is seen as a hopeful exception.
To secure a theatrical release, the film had to completely change its directorial title to producer Yuan Mei. Despite boasting a star-studded cast and a captivating detective plot, public attention remained focused on the connection between the film and its former director.
Based on the original German literary work, *Golden Needle Secret* depicts the psychological breakdown of the character Chi Ning (Yuan Quan). Simply because she fell in love with the writer Kou Yi at first sight, this female researcher plunged herself into a wrong and uncontrollable relationship. The film doesn't hesitate to expose the dark sides of possessiveness, where the line between pure love and madness becomes more fragile than ever.
Besides the appeal of the psychological thriller plot, the film's release date has also sparked speculation about Zhao Wei's impending comeback. Fans are eagerly searching for answers: Is this the first step towards lifting her five-year broadcasting ban? To date, all information regarding the official return of "Little Swallow" remains a big mystery.
On March 22nd in Beijing, a video of Zhao Wei attending an early screening of "Golden Needle" (formerly titled "No Other Love") quickly went viral on social media. Gone was the glamour of a powerful director or A-list star; she appeared simply as a film enthusiast supporting the movie. The image of the "Little Swallow" quietly sitting in the audience, watching the film she had poured so much heart into but now couldn't credit, moved many to tears. For her fans, this presence was not only a farewell after a five-year absence, but also a touching testament to her unwavering love for art.
