Ung Hoang Phuc returned with the "Tri Ky" USB, but it sparked controversy on social media for deleting comments and suggestions, reacting tactlessly, and the product's price being criticized as being too high compared to the market.
Ung Hoang Phuc has officially announced his return to the music scene with a special project titled "Tri Ky" (Soulmate). This project is presented as a collection of 24 high-quality songs, including 4 exclusive, unreleased tracks and a preview of the music video "Giọt Nắng Cuối Chiều" (Last Drop of Afternoon Sunlight), expected to be released in 2026. Notably, fans can request an autograph on the USB drive if they pre-order before December 25, 2025. This also marks the singer's first comeback after the controversy surrounding his music video allegedly promoting a gambling website with the band Ngu Ho Tuong, which further fueled public interest.
However, contrary to expectations of a "image cleanup," Ung Hoang Phuc became embroiled in controversy. Many comments suggested that his response to fans was irritating: those who praised him received likes, but constructive criticism was deleted, or even screenshotted and posted on his personal Facebook page. This series of actions angered some viewers, who felt the singer's attitude was unworthy of a famous artist, leading to the opinion that Ung Hoang Phuc's time was "past" and he had lost the goodwill he once enjoyed.
Beyond his attitude towards fans, the 499,000 VND price tag for the USB drive has also become a subject of controversy. Some viewers argue that the price is too high, given that the current music market relies heavily on streaming, and USB drives are considered outdated technology. Conversely, many counter that releasing physical albums – CDs or USB drives – still holds collectible and sentimental value, similar to how K-pop idols release albums even when fans primarily listen to digital music. G-DRAGON, for example, caused a sensation across Asia with his 2017 USB album "Kwon Ji Yong," proving that USB drives are still sought after by collectors. However, with Ung Hoang Phuc, the backlash has been particularly strong, partly due to his handling of comments and partly because his personal image still haunts the public after previous controversies.
The USB story is just the tip of the iceberg of Ung Hoang Phuc's nearly 20-year career journey. The period from 2002 to 2007 is considered his most brilliant time, when he belonged to Quang Huy's WePro Entertainment. After leaving 1088, he quickly became a leading figure in Vpop with a series of albums such as "Tha Rang Nhu The," "Moi Nguoi Mot Noi," "Toi Khong Tin," and "Hua That Nhieu That Hua That Nhieu ." With his poignant, catchy pop ballad style, the male singer was dubbed the "king of heartbreak songs" for the 80s and 90s generation. Albums from this period sold over 50,000 copies, a number difficult to achieve in the current Vietnamese music market, making him a cherished memory of youth for many.
After leaving WePro in 2007 to start his own company, Ung Hoang Phuc's career took a new direction but lost its previous momentum. Self-production gave him more control but also cost him his powerful "launching pad." Between 2014 and 2015, a herniated disc forced the singer to take a long break, disrupting his career trajectory at a time when the Vietnamese music market was undergoing significant changes.
As a new generation of young singers rose to prominence with modern music, the male singer chose a safer path: re-singing old hits, attending events, organizing anniversary shows, and acting in films. Although he still has loyal fans, he no longer holds the number one star status he had during his heyday. He has admitted to wanting to "start over" and find a way back to music, but the market today is very different from the 2000s.
