At the age of 17, her family went bankrupt and her parents forced her to marry the chief as a concubine. Because she did not accept this marriage, she ran away to Nam Dinh to work as a hired laborer to make a living.
While in Nam Dinh, she met a man selling buffalo noodles and fell in love. Both also came back to contribute rice and cook together, but neither of them had any children.
Hearing that her parents had passed away, she returned to her hometown and saw her younger brother being taken away to pay off debt. Out of pity for him, she once again took off her clothes and left, trying to find a way to save him.
Then she met a merchant named Hong who was originally from Guangdong, and the two fell in love. This person helped Ms. Tu Hong with money to save her child. Because she loved this man's kindness, she accepted to live with him.
Around 1890, because of business losses, her husband left the country, leaving her alone to make a living.
