Ba Nu House is the second movie that Tran Thanh participates in as a director. Still taking the family theme, still gathering the cast of faces who are "close to family" with Tran Thanh like People's Artist Ngoc Giau, Le Giang, Kha Nhu, Le Duong Bao Lam...but the film is not at all. old.
Not only following in the footsteps of the Godfather with available strengths, Ba Nu House also becomes unique and attractive thanks to the following factors.
Stories close to Vietnamese families
Mrs. Nu's House tells the story of the family of Mrs. Ngoc Nu (Le Giang) - the owner of a famous crab cake shop in Saigon. Being betrayed by her husband in the past, Ms. Nu was forced to become the breadwinner of the family, raising two daughters and an elderly mother by herself. Later, the eldest daughter Ngoc Nhu (Kha Nhu) again married a foolish husband - Phu Nhuan (Tran Thanh), Mrs. Nu was more disappointed in men.
All her love and expectations are for Ngoc Nhi (Uyen An). Because she wanted her children to live in peace and success, Ngoc Nu accidentally became a control freak and interfered in every corner of her daughter's private life. However, when Ngoc Nhi entered adulthood, with changes in psychophysiology and social relationships gradually expanded, Ms. Nu's house of discipline began to have disturbances. Gradually, conflicts between the members began to manifest.
When the Ba Nu House project was just announced, many people thought that Tran Thanh was "playing it safe" as he continued to build a movie script around a popular family like what he did with the Godfather. However, after the first premiere for the press and artists, Nha Ba Nu was surprised when there were new exploitation angles about the close relationship. Watching Ba Nu's House, it is easy to see that this is a film with pure Vietnamese material, with revealing issues typical of Vietnamese family life. Is it the childhood trauma, the generation gap, the family operation "where parents put the children" or the pressure of "overcoming happiness" of Gen Z...
In addition to the love and kindness, in Mrs. Nu's family, there are still unjustly imposed rules and less delicate behavior. Above all, every time an incident occurs, everyone thinks they are the victim. The family slices selected by Tran Thanh to bring to Ba Nu's House are very lifelike. Therefore, when watching movies, every audience, regardless of age, probably feels a part of themselves or their own family in the characters, situations, and dialogues.
Owning a "store" of top voice
Right after the trailer was released, the character Ngoc Nhi in the House of Nuns caused a fever with a heart-breaking line: "I would rather fail in my dream than succeed in my mother's dream". This quote has touched the secret thoughts of many young people out there, who are struggling every day to be seen by their parents and to be free to pursue their own dreams. Besides, Tran Thanh's character Phu Nhuan also has a line that makes many people sob: "When people love, they want to stay. No one loves to leave. So if anyone wants to leave, it's for sure. there's a reason". Throughout the film, viewers will encounter many sayings about family affection, love and youthful ambition that make us think.
This does not mean that Ba Nu's house is filled with formal and literary lines. On the contrary, the film has very well balanced the lines of the rustic, everyday life with the "nail" lines that emphasize the emotions and thoughts of the character. The scriptwriter team of Nha Ba Nu's House really put a lot of effort into inserting lines into people's hearts. The beauty is that they are always arranged "falling points" in accordance with the context and character of the character. So that every time the character speaks, the dialogue will create a persistent echo and make the viewer think and reflect endlessly. This is a bright spot that few Vietnamese films can do.
The explosive acting of the cast
The actors participating in Ba Nu House are actually names that are too familiar to Vietnamese audiences: People's Artist Ngoc Giau, Le Giang, Kha Nhu, Tran Thanh, Song Luan, Le Duong Bao Lam, Artist Viet Anh... They also regularly appear in Tran Thanh's comedy skits, web dramas, and movies. The most curious element in Ba Nu's House was originally only Uyen An - Tran Thanh's younger sister when she had the first female lead role in her career. Even so, these familiar faces still create an explosive effect for the Lady's House when they are too suitable for the role.
It will not be an exaggeration to say that Ngoc Nu is one of Le Giang's most impressive roles in recent times. Playing a difficult and harsh middle-aged woman, Le Giang makes viewers both respect and fear. She broke out fiercely when needed and also easily brought tears to the audience through emotional and profound segments. Le Giang has shown a woman with a deep and complicated interior, sloppy on the outside, but inside there are many pitiful feelings. The female artist has also learned to be much more restrained in her expressions, better and more refined than the roles she has performed before.
For the first time starring in a movie, Uyen An also brought a very likable Ngoc Nhi. Tran Thanh's sister has a suitable appearance. Despite her young age, the actress controls quite well the situations that require deepening the character's psychology and complex interactions with her co-stars. Uyen An will be a potential factor with many personality aspects worth exploring in the future.
Returning to Ba Nu's House, Tran Thanh this time also temporarily retired in a smaller role to focus on the role of director. However, his role as the groom Phu Nhuan also creates an interesting break for the film. Different from the somewhat dull and mediocre appearance, this is a character with depth, each appearance makes a strong impression. In addition, People's Artist Ngoc Giau in the role of grandmother Ngoc Nga also makes viewers "take off their hats" because of their professionalism and virtuosity in acting.
The healing story makes viewers cry in happiness
As Tran Thanh promised, Ba Nu's House is not a comedy. Bringing the film to theaters on the first day of the Lunar New Year 2023, the male artist once stated that he wanted to change the stereotype that "Vietnamese New Year movies are only funny comedies" to entertain a few drumsticks. The House of Ba Nu, besides the gentle laughter, still has the ability to make the audience depressed, think and even shed tears.
Because contained in the film is a bitter story about a broken, dysfunctional family. There exists generational disconnection, misunderstandings and bigotry, wrong love. This is also a story about the cost of growing up. The characters must learn to go through events, look directly at the pain and pay the price for their choices. However, it's all about looking back at themselves, becoming stronger, and better understanding the people they love so dearly. Going through suffering, not to despair, but to jump to a brighter chapter. The film also has a way to untie the knots, soothe the wounds very well.
After all, the film still focuses on positive messages and values in life. So The Lady's House is a healing movie. It makes viewers cry, but it is a tear of sympathy and vibration. They cry, but they cry in happiness. Without "big knives", using pure Vietnamese materials and subtleties in evoking sadness and joy, Ba Nu's House is really a work worth enjoying with the family during the Tet season.
