The episode "Lonely City" of the series "Weekend Short Films" depicts the problems that both the elderly and the young are facing in modern society. The film is currently causing a storm with audiences, leaving many thoughtful sobs for viewers.
In the bustling metropolis of Saigon, in a small, quiet boarding house in the heart of the vast city. There, a young gir.l is immersed in darkness and intends to seek deat.h as a way out. Her life is suddenly disrupted when her neighbor - an old woman collecting scrap metal (played by artist Thanh Hien) constantly bothers her with strange actions.
The old woman, with her haggard appearance and worn-out sacks, seemed to be the embodiment of loneliness. But behind that appearance was a warm heart and a soul full of love. The old woman constantly tried to approach the young gir.l, bought her simple food, and then took her along to collect scrap metal. Each of her actions was like small drops of water, gradually melting the ice in the gir.l's heart.
In their first conversation, the old woman revealed that she was living alone, waiting for her son to return. Her loneliness was like a mirror reflecting the young girlâs pain. And it was this empathy that created a strong bond between the two seemingly strangers.
The young gir.l, after many days of sinking into the abyss, finally found a spiritual support. She opened her heart and shared with the old woman about the pain of the past, about her regret and her desire to start over. The next day, the gir.l decided to leave the city and return to her hometown - where her parents were waiting day and night. The old woman saw off the neighbor gir.l with a warm hug. She knew that the gir.l had found her path. And in that moment, she felt happy because she had helped a young person find her life again, happier because she herself had found a new family in the gir.l.
The film deeply depicts the loneliness of people in modern society. Both the young gir.l and the old woman are facing their own pain. The gir.l represents the loneliness and imbalance of young people in modern society. Nowadays, young people face many pressures from study, work, family, and society. This easily leads to stress and fatigue. In addition, the development of technology has reduced direct relationships, replaced by virtual relationships, leading to a feeling of isolation and lack of real connection.
In addition, with the development of social networks, young people easily compare their lives with others, leading to feelings of inferiority, guilt and loneliness. Meanwhile, the old woman represents the image of the elderly who are lonely and abandoned in the city. It can be seen that in today's society, the nuclear family is increasingly popular, the elderly often live alone or with their children but receive little attention. In addition, the rapid urbanization process makes it more difficult for the elderly to adapt to the new living environment, feeling lost and lonely.
More than just a story about humanity, the film is also a reminder of the value of life and the importance of connecting with those around us. Through connecting with each other, strangers can find comfort and healing.
"Lonely City" is part of the Weekend Short Film series, broadcast at 7:50 p.m. every Sunday on THVL1. This is a meaningful film time slot, warming the tired hearts of a society that is moving too fast.
