The Whirlwind: the scenario of overthrowing the president caused a fever, scoring points thanks to veteran actors

The Whirlwind series (Vietnamese title: Whirlwind) attracts attention because it brings together two famous stars Sol Kyung Gu and Kim Hee Ae. Despite choosing a dry political topic, the series still attracts viewers thanks to its attractive script and many unpredictable knots.

The work immediately caused a fever when it was shown on Netflix, quickly topping the charts of the most popular TV shows in many countries, including Vietnam.

The film is set in a fictional South Korea when high-ranking officials in the state apparatus abuse their power for their own purposes.

The story begins a few hours before Prime Minister Park Dong Ho (Seol Kyung Gu) is summoned to investigate corruption. Cornered, he decided to plan to assassinate the President so that he could temporarily take power in the Blue House.

Park Dong Ho's main purpose is to be able to punish the interest group in the contemporary political apparatus, thereby changing the situation of the country for the better.

To do that, he must depose Vice Prime Minister Jung Soo Jin (Kim Hee Ae) - the president's powerful arm, and at the same time overturn the relationship between her and the wealthy Daejin Group but involved in many criminal problems.

In the past, there have been a number of Korean films that exploited political themes, depicting underground fights revolving around politicians such as Assembly (2015), Chief of Staff (2019), Queenmaker (2023). However, The Whirlwind is still highly appreciated for its attractive script, which attracts viewers through each episode.

The work marks the return of screenwriter Park Kyung so - famous for political series such as Punch (2014-2015), Whisper (2017). He is also one of the few TV screenwriters to have won the Baeksang Art Award twice in the Best Screenplay category.

Throughout the 12 episodes, The Whirlwind draws viewers into a power struggle between the two main characters: Prime Minister Park Dong Ho and Deputy Prime Minister Jung so Jin. Both are built with complex thinking, decisive personalities, constantly making unpredictable moves to bring down the opponent.

To tell the story, the screenwriter constantly integrates many twists to make the work more thrilling. The audience almost had to "strain their brains" before the hidden dialogues and dialogues between the characters, thereby better understanding the complex world of officials.

Almost all the characters in the film have their own motives and purposes when entering the political path. However, the attraction of power sometimes makes them blind, ready to shake hands with enemies or make decisions that are contrary to law and morality.

The closer to the end, the more characters appear. Some of the episodes that are installed can sometimes make viewers feel confused and difficult to follow, especially for those who are not familiar with the Korean political system.

Besides the script, one of the factors that helped the film succeed was the honest acting of the cast. In particular, this is Sul Kyung Gu's first TV lead role after nearly 30 years of career. Previously, the actor born in 1967 only acted in movies and was famous for films such as Peppermint Candy (1999), Oasis (2002), Hope (2013).

Sul Kyung Gu left a lot of sympathy when he transformed into Prime Minister Park Dong Ho. He showed the emotions of a complicated politician with many hidden memories, from his decisive eyes to a face that is always filled with sadness.

Standing next to Sul Kyung Gu, Kim Hee Ae is not inferior when playing Jung so Jin - a scheming and ambitious female politician. Star of the Marriage World (2020) does not disappoint viewers by showing the bravery, intelligence and somewhat ruthless personality of the character.

In addition to the two main stars, the other actors are not famous faces but all have real strength and experience. Each person brings authenticity to the role, contributing to the success of the series.
