Living far from home always brings many changes, but for Meritorious Artist Thanh Thanh Tam, 14 years in America have been a simple journey, full of family and nostalgia for the Cai Luong stage.
In a recent interview, artist Thanh Thanh Tam shared many everyday stories, from preparing family meals to her plans to create a talk show about her profession. These heartfelt sharing quickly garnered attention from fans of Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera).
According to Thanh Thanh Tam, her life in America hasn't changed much compared to her years in Vietnam. Despite settling in a foreign land, the artist maintains a simple lifestyle. She recounts that back in Vietnam, she would wake up early every morning to go to the market, cook meals for her mother and child, then take her child to school before going to rehearsals. That rhythm of life has remained almost unchanged since moving to America. She still cooks and takes care of her family herself, considering it a daily joy.
The artist said that her daughter is now grown up and has her own job, but she still maintains the habit of preparing meals for her. For Thanh Thanh Tam, cooking is not only a responsibility but also a way to strengthen family bonds. "I still have the health to do whatever I can for my daughter. I still cook for her every day," she shared. What makes the artist happiest is that the three of them still live together under one roof, something she says is quite rare in the lives of Vietnamese people in America, where many families often move out when their children grow up.
It was this closeness that helped Thanh Thanh Tam feel warm and lessen her homesickness. In her mind, happiness doesn't lie in material things but in the presence of loved ones. She believes that her daughter still living with her is something to be cherished, because in America, maintaining the bond between generations in a family isn't always easy.
Besides sharing about her personal life, Thanh Thanh Tam also revealed her plan to create a channel dedicated to discussing Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera) with artist Quang Thanh during this trip back to Vietnam. According to her, the idea has been brewing between them for a long time, and they even spent a lot of time choosing a name for the program. The content is expected to revolve around the artist's career journey, from her early days studying at Tran Huu Trang School to becoming a familiar face on the Cai Luong stage.
Thanh Thanh Tâm was moved when mentioning the mentors who guided her, such as People's Artist Phùng Há, Kim Cúc, and many other senior artists. Their teachings on acting, singing, and maintaining passion for the profession have stayed with her throughout her artistic journey. The female artist said that every time she receives a new script, she remembers those lessons from years ago, considering them a guiding principle to continue contributing. Those memories have become a source of inspiration for her program, which she hopes to convey to young audiences.
Besides talking about her profession, Thanh Thanh Tam also plans to share memories of her family, especially her parents – who are also involved in Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera). She believes that an artist's life is full of joys and sorrows, ups and downs, but it is these experiences that create emotional depth. The female artist hopes that the program will not only be a personal memoir but also a shared story of a generation of Cai Luong artists.
