Although it aired a long time ago, the echoes of Phuong My Chi's performance Bong Phu Hoa in episode 6 of Sing! Asia 2025 have not cooled down. With a performance that pushed the high notes to the point of "creeping", the performance caused a stir on social networks for many weeks.
Recently, the official performance video has surpassed 11 million views, an extremely impressive number for a live performance. Notably, the Sing! Asia stage has officially "surpassed" the version that caused a stir at School Tour 2024 (currently at nearly 9 million views), thereby affirming the strong vitality of Bong Phu Hoa, one of the main songs of the album Vu Tru Co Bay.
According to the producer DTAP , the group proactively suggested that Phuong My Chi raise the falsetto tone at the climax, surpassing the original arrangement. The purpose was to create surprise and strong effects for international audiences, who were not familiar with the emotional way of singing in the Vietnamese folk style. This challenge required high vocal technique and good breath control. However, the singer born in 2003 performed the climax smoothly and powerfully, surprising even the crew when reviewing the recording.
One of the elements that makes Bong Phu Hoa so haunting is the creepy chanting at the beginning of the song. Many viewers have wondered about the identity of the person performing this chant. Now, DTAP has officially confirmed: it is Thinh Kainz, a member of the group, who is in charge of arranging and conveying this haunting tone.
"Right from the beginning, we wanted to evoke a creepy feeling in the listener. Therefore, including the chanting part was an artistic intention to open up a sacred, mysterious space," DTAP explained.
Notably, the chanting part is built on the foundation of the two-stringed fiddle (two-stringed fiddle) in the style of Southern amateur music, a choice that is strongly indigenous. The chant: "Life's tears reflect in the mirror/ Still have to say all the love to express the words" both reminds of suffering and directly connects to the tragedy of the character Vu Nuong in The Tale of Nam Xuong. The song thus becomes an echo of a cruel fate, across space and time.
Not only the lyrics, the performance is also carefully crafted in the interlude. According to DTAP, this is a combination of the flute and the sound of knocking on cups, sounds often associated with soul-calling rituals in Vietnamese folk beliefs. "We chose the sound of knocking on cups because it is a summoning sound. It is like a layer of symbolic meaning, inviting hidden souls to return to say things that have never been said," shared a representative of DTAP.
Every little detail in Bong Phu Hoa reflects a serious investment in art and culture, showing Phuong My Chi's increasingly steady and sharp direction in combining tradition and modernity. In the midst of a volatile music market, this performance is not only a personal breakthrough moment but also a testament to the young singer's spirit of endless artistic experimentation.
The combination of Phuong My Chi - a person with a solid musical background and DTAP - a group of producers who dare to experiment is opening a new direction for Vietnamese music: renewing heritage, not just "preserving tradition". They show that folk music can be completely lively, contemporary, even cool in its own way, as long as there is serious investment in aesthetic thinking and cultural depth.
From Bong Phu Hoa, it is clear that Vietnamese music does not lack talent, does not lack identity - the important thing is that someone dares to retell old stories in a new language, so that the world will listen.
The latest episode of Sing! Asia 2025 (The Voice of Asia) at Shanghai station continued to witness the explosion of Phuong My Chi, Vietnam's representative in the duo competition.
Accordingly, in the duet competition of Sing! Asia 2025, Phuong My Chi collaborated with female singer Kha Lau (a Chinese singer) in the mashup of Tuy Am and Luc Hai Vi Vuong. Not only that, the mashup also incorporated typical elements of two traditional theater genres, Vietnamese Cai Luong and Chinese opera, contributing to heightening the emotions of the performance.
And thanks to her top 3 win in the latest round at Sing! Asia 2025, Phuong My Chi continues to enter the next semi-final round, where the contestants compete for a place in the final.
DTAP: The team that combined Chinese Opera and Vietnamese Opera, created a resounding victory. Moon17:24:06 13/07/2025Recently, Phuong My Chi has continuously left a strong impression on the biggest music scene in Asia with her music and voice. Besides the talent of the folk singer, people also expressed admiration for the music arrangement of DTAP - the person behind Phuong My Chi.
