According to the announcement from the authorities, the driver who was unfortunately swept away by floodwaters in Quang Tri a few days ago has now been found. Rescue workers arriving at the scene could not help but cry at the tragic scene.
On the evening of November 22, Mr. Ho Van Hien - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of La Lay commune (Dakrong district, Quang Tri province) confirmed that the male driver discovered on the Dakrong river on the same afternoon was the driver of the tractor-trailer that was swept away by floodwaters and went missing on November 17.
According to Mr. Hien, at about 5 p.m. on November 22, the male driver was discovered by locals more than 32 kilometers from the accident site, in Pa Hy village, Dakrong commune. "The family identified him as driver Nguyen Van Th. through the bra still on his body and the ring on his hand," said Mr. Hien.
The moment the victim was found made many people cry, especially the members of the 0 Dong rescue team in Quang Tri province, who had been on duty searching for many days in cold, rainy weather, strong currents and difficult terrain.
As reported by the press, over the past 5 days, search and rescue forces including border guards, police, military, militia and many local volunteers have continuously searched along the Dakrong River to find the whereabouts of driver Nguyen Van Th. (born in 1977, residing in Ba Don ward, Quang Tri province). Low temperatures, prolonged rain and rising river water have made the search extremely difficult, but the forces have persisted and not given up.
Local residents said that every day dozens of motorboats and temporary rafts were mobilized to sweep along the river from La Lay commune downstream. At times, the water flow was so strong that some sections of the river were inaccessible, forcing the search team to stop and wait for the water to recede.
At around 12 noon on November 17, Mr. Nguyen Van Th. drove a tractor trailer from La Lay International Border Gate towards National Highway 9. At that time, heavy rain had been falling for many days, causing the water at A Rong Tren spillway (La Lay commune) to rise and flow rapidly. The local authorities had placed warning signs and barriers blocking the way, requesting that absolutely no one pass through.
However, according to initial verification, Mr. Th. still drove the trailer through the barrier and continued to drive into the overflow area which was flooded about 50 cm. When the vehicle reached the middle of the overflow, the strong current caused the vehicle to tilt, unable to continue moving.
Realizing the dangerous situation, Mr. Th. climbed into the truck to wait for the rescue team. However, at around 12:25 p.m., before the authorities could reach him, the floodwaters suddenly rose and overturned the truck, sweeping both the person and the vehicle downstream.
Witnesses said the water was so murky and strong that in just a few seconds, the dozens of tons of tractor trailer was swept away by the flood.
After the floodwaters receded, searchers found the tractor trailer about 50 meters from where it was swept away. The vehicle was tilted, severely damaged, and stuck in a rock pile downstream. However, the driver's whereabouts remain a mystery, forcing the search to continue.
Th.âs relatives stayed at the scene for days, hoping to find him, even if he was in a broken state. The images of people and rescuers searching in the rain and with flashlights at night moved many people.
Finding driver Nguyen Van Th. has helped his family somewhat ease their grief and complete funeral procedures. Local authorities said they will support the family to stabilize their mental health and handle related issues.
