The Thai media caused a stir with false information, claiming that Pham Tuan Hai mocked the Thai League. However, he corrected himself. The incident raises questions about the motive for distorting in the context of Thai football failing at the 2024 AFF Cup.
On February 2, Khaosod newspaper published a controversial article, saying that striker Pham Tuan Hai said about the Thai League: "The Thai League tournament does not help me raise my level. If I can go abroad to play, I will try my best. I am not interested in tournaments in Southeast Asia, especially the Thai league. If you want to improve your level, you have to play on bigger playing fields."
This newspaper is also accompanied by a "smirk" symbol, which seems to emphasize Tuan Hai's disregard for the Thai League - the strongest league in Southeast Asia. However, immediately, this information was found to be completely false.
After the incident broke out, Pham Tuan Hai had to make corrections. He shared with the media: "Certainly I have never made such a statement about a league with good professional quality like the Thai League. Whatever the tournament, it has its own challenges and difficulties."
In fact, Tuan Hai has shown respect for Thai football so far. This player always appreciates the quality of the Thai League and the excellent players who play here. His only goal is to improve himself and hopes to have the opportunity to play in a more professional football environment to improve his level.
After the misinformation was spread, the online community has been constantly outraged by Khaosod and the people behind this incident. Many Vietnamese football fans have expressed their dissatisfaction and asked the newspaper to make an official apology.
In addition, the Hanoi club has also affirmed that the information posted by Khaosod newspaper is false. The representative of the Hanoi club emphasized that Tuan Hai did not make any statements comparing the Thai League and other leagues.
So why did the Thai media choose to distort Pham Tuan Hai's statement? In recent years, Thai football is facing many challenges. The Thai national team has had a rather disappointing year, especially at the 2024 AFF Cup, when they lost to the Vietnamese team in the final.
Thai football, although considered the strongest in the region, has not made significant progress in recent years. The Thai League, Thailand's national championship, no longer attracts as many quality foreign players as before.
In addition, the emergence of many successful Vietnamese players in foreign tournaments, such as players competing in Japan, South Korea and Europe, has created a great motivation for young Vietnamese players, including Pham Tuan Hai.
In this context, it can be seen that the Thai media has tried to create a wave of public opinion by distorting Tuan Hai's statements. This is a tactic to "lower" the image of Vietnamese players and reduce the confidence of Vietnamese players in going abroad to compete. If Pham Tuan Hai can really succeed in bigger tournaments, this will further reduce the attractiveness of the Thai League and affect the prestige of Thai football.
Meanwhile, some Thai fans also felt confused and uncomfortable with this action. They think that the Thai media is harming regional football and does not create opportunities for exchanges and learning between countries in the region.
The fact that Pham Tuan Hai was distorted by the Thai media is only part of the big picture of football in Southeast Asia. This is not the first time Vietnamese players have faced misinformation from foreign media. However, Tuan Hai's correction helped clarify everything and prove his honesty.
