Ho Tan Tai: Vietnam national team defender suffers the same injury as Xuan Son, regrettably leaves AFF Cup

Ho Tan Tai, born on November 6, 1997 in Hoai An, Binh Dinh, is one of the best defenders in Vietnamese football. He is currently playing for Becamex Binh Duong club and the Vietnam national team.

With a height of 1.8 m and flexible playing ability, Tan Tai has become one of the important players of the national team. Ho Tan Tai started his football career very early. He joined Binh Dinh Sports Talent School at the ag.e of 11 and quickly showed his talent. In 2015, Tan Tai officially became known when he and the Binh Dinh U21 team won 3rd place in the National U21 finals. After this tournament, he was called up to the Vietnam U-19 team to participate in the 2015 Southeast Asian U-19 football tournament.

In 2018, after helping Binh Dinh Club to promotion to the First Division, Tan Tai moved to play for Becamex Binh Duong. Here, his career took off, especially when he was called up by coach Park Hang-seo to the Vietnam national team to prepare for the rematch against Jordan in the 2019 Asian Cup qualifiers.

In 2023, Tan Tai moved to play for Hanoi Police and helped the team win the 2023 V.League 1 championship. However, in 2024, he returned to Becamex Binh Duong, continuing to contribute to his old team.

Ho Tan Tai has made many important contributions to the Vietnam national team. He represented Vietnam at the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup and the 2019 AFC Asian Cup. Tan Tai was also part of the Vietnam team that won the bronze medal at the 2019 SEA Games and won the 2024 AFF Cup.

Recently, Ho Tan Tai suffered a serious injury to his right knee's cruciate ligament in the second leg of the ASEAN Cup 2024 semi-final against Singapore. During the move, Tan Tai entered the away team's 16m50 area. He received a pass from Van Vi.

After receiving the ball, Tan Tai tried to turn around and get past the Singapore defender. However, when his foot landed, he got into the wrong position, causing Tan Tai to get injured. He almost collapsed on the ground.

Immediately afterwards, Ho Tan Tai was taken off the field on a stretcher. This morning (December 30), Tan Tai was taken by the team doctor for an MRI scan to determine the extent of the injury he suffered in last night's match.

According to the results, Tan Tai only suffered a contusion of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, fortunately not requiring surgery, and is expected to take about 6-8 weeks to recover. Therefore, the AFF Cup 2024 has ended for the right-back currently playing for Binh Duong Club.

However, after returning home with the Vietnam National Team after finishing the AFF Cup 2024, Tan Tai had his injury re-examined in Ho Chi Minh City. According to the doctors' instructions, Tan Tai needs to undergo anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery to ensure the best recovery.

After undergoing ligament reconstruction surgery, Tan Tai will continue his rehabilitation with the support of the team's doctors. It is expected that it will take Tan Tai about 6 to 8 months to return to training and competition.

The surgery of the Vietnamese national team defender lasted more than 1 hour at Van Hanh Hospital (HCMC) and was a great success. Ho Tan Tai is expected to rest for 8-9 months and undergo physical therapy to return to football.

Sharing after the surgery, Ho Tan Tai expressed regret for the unfortunate incident. However, the defender from Binh Dinh affirmed that he will try his best to recover to soon return to contribute to Binh Duong Club and the Vietnam National Team.

"It's unfortunate for Xuan Son and me. This is something no one wants. But after going through it, we can only try to overcome it," Tan Tai told the media. "The doctor said it would take about 8 to 9 months to fully recover. But since I've already suffered this injury, I can only try to recover. Practice according to the doctor's instructions, find the best ways to be able to return sooner. That's what I want."
