At the age of 80, Meritorious Artist Thanh Loan - who plays the role of nun Huyen Trang in "Saigon Commandos" happily enjoys a peaceful life with her husband, a Professor and Doctor of Mathematics, who is more than 10 years old.
Nun Huyen Trang is not my favorite role
Meritorious Artist Thanh Loan was born in 1951 in Hanoi, the 5th child in a family of 8 members, none of whom are artists. At the age of 16, she studied acting at the Military Art School, then worked at the General Political Department's Drama Troupe.
In 1986, Thanh Loan was loved by a large audience for her role as nun Huyen Trang in Saigon Commandos - a classic work of Vietnamese revolutionary cinema, directed by Long Van.
The image of a female commando soldier dressed as a monk with deep, attractive eyes and a strong, courageous personality has left a deep impression on many generations of audiences.
At the time of participating in the film, Thanh Loan had a family and was working as a director for Security Television. During a business trip to Ho Chi Minh City in 1984, she accidentally met artist Trinh Thai - the main art designer of the film.
Hearing the artist say that she had not found an actress to play the role of nun Huyen Trang even though the film had been filmed for a year, she immediately suggested that she read the script. Realizing that the character had an outstanding personality, Thanh Loan decided to ask the agency for permission to make a movie.
To complete the role, Thanh Loan had to cut her long hair because in the past there were no rubber caps to cover her head. Next, she went to Duoc Su Pagoda to stay for 1 week, ate vegetarian rice and practiced how to chant sutras, knock on bells, ring bells, and beg for alms to look like a monk. On the other hand, she practices boat rowing and soaks in the Southern rivers...
In a conversation with Dan Tri reporter, Thanh Loan said, the role of female commando soldier Huyen Trang is "the most beautiful highlight in my life as an artist". Every time it is mentioned, she always feels proud in her heart for owning a role with timeless vitality.
Up to now, after 37 years, many audiences still call Meritorious Artist Thanh Loan as nun Huyen Trang. She confided to Dan Tri reporter: "I feel very lucky to have a role of a lifetime, to step out into the world. Many viewers even named their child Huyen Trang even though my character was very miserable and endured. and face many disadvantages.
However, to Thanh Loan, nun Huyen Trang is just a beautiful and strange role. Talking about professional quality, she likes the role of Ms. Rieng in The Man Who Returns to the Sedge Field by author Le Luu, directed by People's Artist Bach Diep. Or the role of engineer Khue in The Forgotten Project - director Nong Ich Dat; the role of Le in Song to Battle by the late People's Artist Tran Dac.
Nun Huyen Trang is the last role in Thanh Loan's artistic life. After the success of Saigon Rangers, she switched to directing documentaries, holding the position of Deputy Director of Police Film Studio.
Her busy work left her with no time to appear on screen, partly because she couldn't find a good enough script and a character to help her overcome the shadow of nun Huyen Trang.
"Children who don't pursue art are lucky"
In her youth, Meritorious Artist Thanh Loan possessed a beauty that fascinated many people, with a delicate face, big round eyes, and a high, straight nose. Beautiful and pursued by many people, Thanh Loan fell in love with her husband - a Doctor of Mathematics who is 10 years older than him through... matchmaking.
At the age of 23, Thanh Loan still did not have a lover, making everyone excited and urged. Because at that time she was a soldier, she was never allowed to live at home, and was banned from staying at home to sleep on weekends. Therefore, the actress has little time and conditions to learn and date.
Sharing with the media, she said that during a business trip, she met director Thu Chung. Seeing that Thanh Loan was beautiful, sincere and simple, the female director introduced her nephew who had just studied abroad majoring in Mathematics and Information Technology. The two were fascinated by each other's beauty and talent, and had feelings from the first time they met.
In her recollection, Thanh Loan said her impression of her husband was that she was a quiet, gentle person. "When I met such a tall, handsome, knowledgeable, understanding and gentle man, I immediately fell in love. My husband may seem cold on the outside but on the inside he is very warm and affectionate, just my type. like," she said. The actress said her husband "flirted" her by writing poems and drawing portraits as gifts.
In 1974, Thanh Loan got married after more than a year of love. The artist's married life was rumored to be malicious like she was caught jealous, became a monk...
Faced with false rumors, Thanh Loan chose not to pay attention, because she understood that it would be difficult for a public figure to avoid this. "There will be many people who love you, but there will also be people who hate, are jealous and lie. That's a very real thing. I consider it normal," she said.
Meritorious Artist Thanh Loan has two children, both of whom are not into art. But for her, it was luck, because making art is very hard. According to Thanh Loan, this profession requires beauty, otherwise you will only play a public role all your life.
"The life of an artist is very short, how many people can still act when they are old? The family is extremely disadvantaged, especially when the children are young," the female artist confided. She said that if she could choose again, she would not do art, even though she was favored by the profession and successful.
Meritorious Artist Thanh Loa's children are all grown up and have families. Her grandchild studies in Australia, so occasionally she and her children come to visit them and travel.
At the age of 72, even though her hair has turned gray, Meritorious Artist Thanh Loan still has a gentle and elegant beauty. Currently, she is retired and enjoys the military rank of Colonel. In addition, she holds the position of Vice President of the Hanoi Union of Literature and Arts, and Vice President in charge of the Hanoi Cinema Association. The female artist enjoys a peaceful life with her husband and the joy of old age, "not bothering about her children or grandchildren".
Entering this age, Meritorious Artist Thanh Loan said that she does not regret anything, she is only afraid of her poor health. She is a person who likes to travel and go out here and there, so she created the group "Hoa Chan" to occasionally meet and interact with friends and fellow artists.
