People's Artist Thuy Mui is a native of Ninh Binh - the cradle of Cheo art. She is considered one of the "old trees" of Cheo village. At the ag.e of 61, she is still passionate and guides young people so that the traditional art does not fade away.
People's Artist Thuy Mui was born in 1963 in Ninh Binh - a place known as "the land of Cheo". Since childhood, she has been expose.d to soulful Cheo melodies. Possessing a sweet voice and rare performing talent, People's Artist Thuy Mui quickly asserted her position on the Cheo stage. After graduating from Ninh Binh Cheo Theatre, she joined the Hanoi Cheo Theatre and achieved many successes.
People's Artist Thuy Mui left an impression on the audience with her diverse roles: from the role of a beautiful woman like Y Lan in "Ly Thuong Kiet", Mai in "Nguoi Thien Do", to the role of a comedic character with Dop's mother in "Quan Am Thi Kinh" and the role of a mother in the play "Ba Gia Ra Thanh Pho". In 2008, People's Artist Trinh Thuy Mui was appointed Director of the Hanoi Cheo Theater.
During her 10 years of leadership, the Hanoi Cheo Theatre has achieved great success, becoming the leading unit in the country in terms of performance, revenue and artistic level. The Theatre received the First Class Labor Medal in September 2012.
Being bold with her profession and creative is what her colleagues always appreciate about artist Thuy Mui. One of the ideas that she has successfully implemented is combining Cheo, Chau Van singing, Xam singing, and water puppetry to create the Long Thanh performance program to serve tourists. Recently, the Hanoi Cheo Theater boldly renewed the School Stage program. It is still introducing Cheo to students, but depending on their ag.e, she has inserted fairy tales and legends into Cheo melodies... "The audience who loved Cheo in the past is now 70 - 80 years old. If we want Cheo to survive long term, we must build a new generation of audiences who are attached to Cheo. We must let them watch Cheo from a young ag.e to hope that they will love Cheo," People's Artist Thuy Mui expressed.
In the midst of the devaluation of traditional arts, under the leadership of artist Thuy Mui, the Hanoi Cheo Theatre is still "healthy". In addition to the two theaters Dai Nam on Hue Street and the theater on Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street that are always lit, she also takes the artists of the theater on tour to many provinces and cities across the country. Not only in big cities, the troupe also performs in prisons in the Northwest mountains, all the way to Ca Mau Cape. She said the idea of introducing Cheo to Nha Trang audiences is also in her plans.
In 2018 - 2020, People's Artist Thuy Mui assumed the role of Director of the Center for Preservation and Development of Traditional Vietnamese Stage Arts. In addition, she is also a delegate of the 12th National Assembly of Vietnam. With her contributions to art, People's Artist Thuy Mui has been awarded many noble titles such as: Third-class Labor Medal, Meritorious Artist, People's Artist, Distinguished Citizen of the Capital and a series of other awards and honors.
Currently over 60 years old, People's Artist Thuy Mui still spends time paying close attention to art. She is the President of the Vietnam Stage Artists Association, term 9, 2019 - 2024. On her personal page, the artist regularly updates images of major performances in Hanoi and other provinces and cities across the country, along with sharing her own views. Recently, Hai Phong Cheo Troupe continued to launch the Cheo play "Xuan Huong Nu Si" staged by People's Artist Trinh Thuy Mui - President of the Vietnam Stage Artists Association. In the history of Vietnamese literature, Ho Xuan Huong is an extremely special female poet. She not only left behind a huge and unique Nom poetry legacy but also spoke out for feminism and women's equality under feudalism.
Her poetry not only protects women and fights against obstacles to human progress, but also praises good and civilized behavior. For that reason, on November 23, 2021, the UNESCO General Assembly officially honored her as a "cultural celebrity with a human vision".
On stage, Ho Xuan Huong has been staged by many theaters. However, the most typical is the cheo play Ho Xuan Huong staged by the Vietnam Cheo Theater in 1987, directed by People's Artist Bui Dac Su, written by Thuy Linh - Bui Duc Hanh.
