Tribes in Nigeria always have unique customs that make those who love to explore feel excited and want to learn. Two of those tribes, Koma and Dupa, both have in common the use of leaves instead of clothes.
According to the organization that researches ethnic groups around the world - Last Places, including experts with 25 years of experience in the tourism industry, the Koma tribe used to be cattle herders. However, to this day, they mainly grow millet, corn and peanuts. In this tribe's society, women have great power when controlling barns and farms.
In Cameroon and Nigeria, there have been many organizations organizing discovery tours. Tours usually last about 10 days, go through many places and visit famous tribes such as Koma, Bororo, Fulani Baka (dwarf tribe). The cost of each tour is about 5,000 USD per person. Accordingly, tourists will often camp in the village of the Koma people to learn about their lives.
One of the things that will definitely impress visitors is that the women in this tribe will wear costumes made of leaves. It can be said that they are almost naked, only wearing branches and leaves to cover their private areas. Around their necks, Koma people often wear bracelets made from old coins from Nigeria and Cameroon, accompanied by some leather talismans.
Another interesting thing about this tribe is that the girls will wear red, blue or white ribbons on their waists after the coming of age ceremony. However, there will be no change in costumes, they will still be "outfits" made from leaves. In addition, those girls will also start lubricating their bodies with sandalwood mixed with cassia oil. Koma women apply clay mixed with oil to their hair to create long, braided locks.
The Koma people fix the leaves with belts. While women wear leaves, men wear leather pants or crudely woven cotton.
Koma people still go to small markets in the delta to buy things such as salt, agricultural tools, electrical equipment, plastic items or exchange their agricultural products.
According to African Leadership magazine, Koma women do not want to wear normal clothes for fear of "the wrath of the gods". At some markets, if forced to wear clothes, they will choose to wrap extra paper to cover and remove them on the way home.
Interesting things about the Dupa tribe are shared by a Vietnamese tourist named Lai Ngu Itchy Feet. He is quite a famous figure in the travel community. Up to now, he has set foot in many countries and territories. One of the places he loves the most is Africa. To him, this vast continent is quite pristine so there are many interesting spots to explore.
He has had many trips to Africa. For him, because this is a land that is still quite strange to most Vietnamese tourists, it is also a great motivation for him to want to come here more and learn more about the world. most unique, bringing viewers many interesting experiences.
During his trip to Cameroon in 2022, he had the opportunity to visit some remote tribes that still maintain a primitive lifestyle that is far from the modern world. One of them is the Dupa tribe.
Located in the far south of Cameroon, reaching the Dupa tribe is difficult. Not only that, the security situation in northern Cameroon is still unstable, so it is not simple for tourists to travel to the tribes.
Itchy Feet Lai said that fortunately when he visited this tribe, it was the dry season so travel was not hindered. To get to the village, you have to walk 1-2 hours deep in the remote mountains. But the "sweet fruit" for guests who are willing to explore is the spacious natural landscape, everything is pristine and majestic, far different from the outside world. It is truly worth experiencing
"The houses made of dirt are still rudimentary. Meanwhile, modern technical equipment to access civilized life is completely absent," he said.
The characteristic of the people in this tribe is that they are all very friendly and hospitable. They always welcome guests like him with all the warmth, not forgetting to offer all the food and drinks they have.
In particular, one of the "strange things" that impressed him about this tribe is that the women here still maintain the custom of wrapping leaves from the forest around their bodies instead of wearing clothes. He said, this is a special type of leaf. After a few days, they had to take new leaves to "change clothes" because the "pants" were withered and could no longer be used.
It is known that this is a daily lifestyle and a tradition that the Dupa people have preserved for many generations. No matter how advanced the civilized society is, tribal people still want to maintain a simple lifestyle, in harmony with nature.
"They are even surprised because people in the modern world have to cover their bodies with all kinds of fabrics, covering certain parts. They feel sorry that civilized people cannot wear cool, comfortable clothes like They, too, can't live in nature," Lai Ngac Legs happily revealed.
Because they live almost separately from the outside world, the Dupa people's lives are very simple and extremely primitive. Concepts like smartphones and social networks do not exist at all.
For many generations, the tribe has maintained agriculture and animal husbandry. They grow crops in the hills far from the village and often go to work early in the morning and return in the evening. In addition, people also do weaving and metal casting.
