Recently, on his personal page, musician Nguyen Van Chung shared a long article about the meaning he conveyed in the song "Mother's Diary" - a famous composition that was successfully performed by singer Hien Thuc and left many deep impressions in the hearts of many generations of audiences.
The article originated from a comment from an audience member, asking whether the last lines of the song hinted at the mother's impending death: "Mom suddenly woke up, and Mom saw her child still as small as an angel/ Seeing her child crying, Mom's eyes were filled with tears/ Thank you for coming to Mom." In response to this question, musician Nguyen Van Chung frankly admitted and revealed the story behind the composition process.
Nguyen Van Chung said that when he reached the end of the composition, he was confused about how to end after describing the child's journey of growth through the mother's perspective from when he was in the womb, born, learning to walk, learning to talk, to when he grew up, loved, got married and went to work far away.
While struggling, the male musician recalled stories and letters in newspapers and books about the regret of many children who were too busy with work to be with their mothers in their final moments. However, because this was a song written for his mother, Nguyen Van Chung did not want to end it with a painful loss.
Instead, he chose a humane ending: in the last moment, the mother still vaguely saw her child as small as ever, smiling happily and whispering words of thanks. That was also the end of "Mother's Diary", opening a new cycle - where the child will also continue to write her own "diary" when she becomes a mother. Nguyen Van Chung confided: "I really like that idea, and often proudly say 'Oh, how wonderful it was that I thought of it back then!'".
However, what made Nguyen Van Chung choke up was that the imaginary ending later became a reality in his own life. The day his mother fell seriously ill, in the moment she woke up, she still hugged him, scratched his head, scratched his back like when he was a child, even though her breathing was getting weaker. The last words she left were: "I love you, Chung."
Nguyen Van Chung burst into tears like a child, and realized that he had never truly grown up until he lost his mother. The male musician wrote on his personal page: "It turns out that it wasn't Mom's illusion, but that I had never truly grown up until my mother passed away!".
Through that experience, the male musician believes that Mother's Diary was not simply composed by him, but was a message written by his mother with boundless love, and he was just the one to record it on her behalf.
For Nguyen Van Chung, the greatest happiness is when the song is loved by millions of people, especially women and mothers. Because they see in the song their own image, along with a sacred, immense love for their children - a love so great that "they always hope 'There will be someone who loves their children more than their mothers love' even though that can never happen!".
"Mother's Diary" is therefore not only an immortal piece of music, but also a tribute, a message about maternal love - an eternal love that nothing can replace.
