As a female star in the silent film era of Chinese cinema, Nguyen Linh Ngoc turned her life into an unfinished legend by ending her own life at the age of 25.
Poor childhood
Nguyen Linh Ngoc, originally from Guangdong, was born on April 26, 1910 in Shanghai. At this time, she has not yet taken the name Nguyen Linh Ngoc. At the age of 6, her father died of illness, and Nguyen Linh Ngoc's mother had to work for a rich family named Truong to earn money to feed her.
At that time, advanced Western education became popular in Shanghai. In order to change her destiny, not wanting her daughter to live a life of poverty and hardship like herself, the mother decided to send Nguyen Linh Ngoc to Sung Duc girls' school to receive advanced Western education.
First love with a prince surnamed Truong
When she was only 16 years old, Nguyen Linh Ngoc fell in love with the rich guy Truong Dat Dan (where her mother worked) 3 years older than her. Despite being opposed by their families, Nguyen Linh Ngoc and Truong Dat Dan still moved in together, but both are now unemployed. Although Truong Dat Dan has no money, he loves to play, not long after living with Nguyen Linh Ngoc, he starts to lose his temper.
At this time, Truong Dat Dan's brother Truong Tue Chong introduced Nguyen Linh Ngoc to audition at a film company, becoming an actor to earn a living. Although she had no acting experience, she was fortunate to meet director Boc Van Thuong, who had an eye for the person who gave her life-changing experience and also created an illustrious legend. Entering the cinematic path was a blessing for Nguyen Linh Ngoc, but it was also the beginning of the tragedy of this beauty's life.
Turning point in life
The first movie in which Nguyen Linh Ngoc played the female lead was the work "Nominal husband and wife" written by veteran screenwriter Trinh Chinh Thu. Although his acting skills are still limited, thanks to his outstanding appearance and inherent melancholy temperament, this role has achieved great success and attracted the attention of a large audience.
From 1926 to 1928, she filmed 4 consecutive films: "Nominal husband and wife", "Beijing's Yang Guifei", "Blood Tears Beer" and "White Cloud Tower"; gradually gained a foothold in the hearts of the public.
In 1929, the success of the character Yen Yen in the movie "Spring Dream of the Ancient Capital" contributed to making Linh Ngoc's name a big star in the movie world.
In 1932, the Nhat Nhi Bat event (Japanese troops invaded and attacked Shanghai on January 28) occurred, causing many wealthy merchants in Shanghai at that time to flee to Hong Kong. She, along with Truong Dat Dan and her adopted daughter also migrated to seek refuge.
Nguyen Linh Ngoc and co-stars
After arriving in Hong Kong, Nguyen Linh Ngoc met Duong Quy San, a tea trader. Although he was dating actress Truong Chic Van at that time, Duong Quy San was not afraid to leave this lover, looking for ways to "attack" Nguyen Linh Ngoc. At that time, the marriage life of Nguyen Linh Ngoc and Truong Dat Dan was in great trouble, so she fell in love with Duong Quy San. After that, Nguyen Linh Ngoc decided to divorce Truong Dat Dan and moved to Shanghai to live as husband and wife with Duong Quy San.
During his time in Shanghai, Nguyen Linh Ngoc's career rose like a kite in the wind. She became a female star at the height of fame, one of the most famous Chinese stars of the 1930s and was also known as the "queen of silent films" at that time.
Waves of wind come
Enjoying the sweetness of love, Nguyen Linh Ngoc suddenly received a letter from Truong Chic Van - a movie actress and former lover of Duong Quy San, but was abandoned by him. The letter revealed that Tang Guishan had an official wife in Guangdong. His business is mainly based on the wealth and influence of his wife's family, so he will never leave his wife to come to her. At the end of the letter, Truong Chic Van left a sentence: "She looks at me in the present, she is also in the future" . At that time, Nguyen Linh Ngoc still thought that this was just a lie made by Truong Chic Van because he was jealous of her and Duong Quy San.
Some time later, in April 1933, Truong Dat Dan returned to Shanghai to cause difficulties with Nguyen Linh Ngoc. With the support of Tang Quy San, the actress decided to cut off the relationship with this family-breaker. Although the two were not married, Nguyen Linh Ngoc still invited a lawyer to draft a contract, agreeing to pay Truong Dat Dan 100 dong a month for 2 years to end everything.
At that time, public opinion began to speak out, rumors about her love affair with Tang Quy San. Many people say that a couple is greedy for money, the other likes to joke around with women. Nguyen Linh Ngoc still doesn't care, she thinks that as long as she tries to make money, is economically independent, as long as Duong Quy San loves herself. But not long after, she quickly discovered, the person she loved had a new joy.
When he saw that he was about to expire, Truong Dat Dan continuously sought to torment and harass Nguyen Linh Ngoc. When she was determined not to give money, he wrote a complaint to the court, accusing her of stealing many properties of the Truong family and giving it to Duong Ly San. But the businessman surnamed Tang denounced the opposite that Zhang Gongzi smeared his honor. Even to prove his pure identity, he forced Nguyen Linh Ngoc to publish in the newspaper: "I am living with Duong Ly San, but I have never given him anything of the Truong family. We still economically independent".
A sad ending to a life full of hardships
I can't stand the ax of public opinion and cold and cruel treatment from the two men I once loved deeply. Nguyen Linh Ngoc endured all the sadness and humiliation in her heart, deciding to free herself to end her days of suffering.
On March 8, 1935, Nguyen Linh Ngoc left with resentment when she was almost 25 years old.
On March 14, 1935, the delegation to see off Nguyen Linh Ngoc's coffin to the cemetery amounted to several hundred thousand people, including the most famous and powerful figures in the entertainment industry. Even the New York Times reporter felt too surprised by Nguyen Linh Ngoc's funeral, so he wrote about this event and called it "the greatest funeral in the world".
The passing of a beautiful and talented actress has left people with infinite grief, tears have been shed because of a miserable and troubled life.
