After 2 years of fighting the terrible cancer, the famous actress was confirmed to have passed away at the age of 44. The news of her passing has left the public shocked and saddened.
Recently, according to a source from The Guardian, Ãmilie Dequenne passed away at the age of 44. The actress's representative said that she breathed her last at a hospital in the suburbs of Paris, France on Sunday evening (March 16) due to a rare adrenal cancer.
On social networks and film forums, many audiences expressed their condolences upon hearing the sad news of Ãmilie Dequenne. The representative of the Cannes Film Festival also posted on Instagram: "Infinite sadness, Emilie. The film industry will always remember you. We would like to send our condolences to your family and loved ones."
Ãmilie Dequenne first revealed that she had cancer on her personal Instagram account in October 2023. Since then, the actress has regularly updated her audience on her cancer treatment. Despite her illness, she remains optimistic and cheerful to inspire those around her.
On World Cancer Day, February 4, Ãmilie Dequenne posted a photo of herself with the caption: "It's a fight. We have no choice. Sending my love to those in the same situation. Take good care of yourself."
In her final interview with The Action, the actress said: "I didn't know I was sick at the time I was shooting the movie, and I got sick about six or eight months later. I'm still fighting, I'm still doing chemo, but I'm fine, I'm fine."
Ãmilie Dequenne, born in 1981 in Belgium, began her acting career at the age of 12 with the La Relève theater troupe. Her breakthrough came at the age of 18 when she made her big screen debut in "Rosetta" (1999).
Her role as a young woman living in a trailer with her alcoholic mother, struggling to escape poverty in "Rosetta" won Ãmilie the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival and also helped the film win the prestigious Palme d'Or. The series of scenes depicting her writhing in pain still make audiences shudder when they remember.
After this success, the actress quickly became a bright face of Belgian and French cinema. She appeared in many outstanding works such as The Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001), The Bridge of San Luis Rey (2004), The Girl on the Train (2009).
With "Our Children" (2012), Ãmilie Dequenne continued to win the Best Actress award at the Un Certain Regard section of Cannes. In the film, she plays Murielle - a young woman who falls in love and marries Mounir, a man of Moroccan origin, but is gradually controlled by Dr. André - Mounir's patron. Manipulated and isolated, Murielle falls into a deep depression, leading to the tragedy of sending all five of her own children to the other world.
In an interview, Ãmilie Dequenne once shared: "I went to see many psychologists to understand the character's psychological state. The most important thing I learned is that not everyone with depression can become a murderer. To play this role, I need to keep a distance from the character, and family is the safe place that helps me overcome it."
After "Our Children", the actress continued to affirm her talent through "Not My Type" (2014), "This Is Our Land" (2017), "Love Affair(s)" (2020) and "Close" (2022) by Lukas Dhont. Notably, the film "Close" with her participation was nominated for the Oscar for Best International Feature Film that same year.
Ãmilie Dequenne's last film was "Survive" - a clever surreal disaster film released in 2024 written by Richard Abate and Jeremy Ungar. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Alex Morel.
Contrary to the often-damaged roles she plays on screen, Ãmilie Dequenne is a cheerful, happy person in real life. She once described herself as a simple person who loves her family, loves to cook and enjoys the little joys in life.
Ãmilie Dequenne has a particular love for England, having studied in Bournemouth, directing Shakespeare plays for children and being a loyal fan of the series "Black Mirror" produced by Charlie Brooker.
In her personal life, Ãmilie Dequenne has had two relationships. The actress has a daughter named Milla born in 2002 with her ex-boyfriend DJ Alexandre Savarese. In 2014, she married French actor Michel Ferracci.
