Oscars 2025: A black female star burst into tears, receiving a trophy to make history

On the morning of March 3 (Vietnam time), the 97th Academy Awards ceremony took place at the Dolby Theater, honoring the best film works of the year.

"Anora", "Conclave", "Wicked", "The Substance"... were honored one after another, while the most prestigious award - Best Picture - is still an unknown. Of the 10 films nominated for Best Picture, more than half won at least one Oscar .

Netflix's film "Emilia Pérez", despite the controversy related to actress Karla Sofía Gascón's past tweets, still helped Zoe Saldaña win the Best Supporting Actress award for her role as Rita Mora Castro.

Zoe's winning of the Oscar made history when she was a Dominican-American who won the Golden Statue at the biggest film award in the country. On the stage to receive the award, Saldaña was emotional, proudly saying: "I am a child of immigrant parents with dreams, dignity and hard-working hands. I was the first Dominic-American to receive an Oscar, and I knew I wasn't going to be the last."

"Emilia Pérez" also tops this year's nomination list at the Oscars with a total of 13 nominations, just one nomination behind the three most nominated films in Oscar history, including: "All about Eve" (1950), "Titanic" (1997) and La La Land (2017). In addition to "Emilia Pérez", two films "Anora" and "Conclave" were honored in the categories of Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay, respectively.

"Conclave" screenwriter Peter Straughan was honored in the "Best Adapted Screenplay" category with a script adaptation of a novel by Robert Harris, while "Anora" Sean Baker received two awards for "Best Original Screenplay" and "Best Editing".

Upon accepting the award, Baker thanked the community of physical activity sellers for sharing their stories, helping him create the film that was both authentic and emotional. One of the biggest surprises of the awards night was the "Best Animated Film" category when "Flow", a non-dialogue film from Latvia, surpassed DreamWorks' "The Wild Robot" to win.

Director Gints Zilbalodis emotionally shared: "Thank you to my dogs and cats." This is the first time a Latvian film has won an Oscar. "Wicked" also left its mark when Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo opened the ceremony with emotional performances.

This musical film later won two important awards: "Production Design" and "Costume Design". "The Substance" won the Best Makeup and Hairdressing Award for its obsessive creations about beauty and body.

Meanwhile, "Dune: Part Two" continued to dominate in the technical categories with the "Best Visual Effects" and "Best Sound" awards. This year's Oscars mark one of the most unpredictable seasons in years, taking place in the context of the film industry facing many difficulties.

The strikes in 2023 greatly affected the film's release schedule, causing many projects to be delayed. However, the Academy still expects to attract the attention of the audience even though there are no blockbusters like "Oppenheimer" or "Barbie" like last year.

Zoe Yadira Saldaña Perego, born in 1978, is an American actress. After her performance with the drama troupe Faces, she starred in two episodes of the 1999 film Law & Order. Her film career began a year later as a ballet dancer in the film Center Stage (2000)

Saldaña began working in science fiction films in 2009 with her first of many appearances as Nyota Uhura in the Star Trek franchise and her first appearance as Neytiri in the Avatar series. She played Gamora in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beginning with Guardians of the Galaxy (2014).

Saldaña has appeared in three of the five highest-grossing films of all time (Avatar, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame), an achievement that no other actor has achieved. Her films have grossed over $11 billion worldwide, and she is the second-highest-earning movie actress of all time as of 2019.
