Myra Tran: Revealing the "pressure" that once made the X-Factor champion want to quit her career

Myra Tran is a powerful vocalist known as the "Queen of High Notes." Starting from winning the 2016 X-Factor Vietnam Champion at the age of 16, she reached the international Top 40 of American Idol 2019.

Myra Tran, whose real name is Tran Minh Nhu, was born in 1999 in An Giang. She grew up in the arms of her grandmother, nurturing a strong passion for singing from an early age, especially with European and American music. Although her family did not fully support the artistic path at first because of the risks, Minh Nhu still diligently taught herself vocal techniques through YouTube videos. She often trains in the bathroom – her own "stage".

Before becoming famous, this Western girl proved her talent through local and national awards: First Prize of An Giang Provincial Television Singing at the age of 15 and National Second Prize Be You Honda. These early achievements persuaded her family to support and help the young girl set foot in Ho Chi Minh City to pursue her dream of singing professionally.

X-Factor Champion: The Too Heavy Crown of 16

In 2016, Tran Minh Nhu officially entered Vietnamese showbiz when he participated in the program The X-Factor Vietnam. She is the youngest contestant in the contest but possesses a "terrible" voice, full of internal strength, a rare wide vocal range and diverse singing abilities. Although she has not gone through any training schools, Minh Nhu surprised the audience and the judges with emotional and technical performances. She excellently won the title of Mystery Factor Champion when she was only 16 years old.

However, this prestigious crown comes with enormous pressures. Minh Nhu's name at that time did not really make a deep impression in the hearts of the Vietnamese public, she even encountered many controversies and mixed opinions from the audience, saying that she did not deserve the title of Champion. The heavy psychological pressure of puberty, the skepticism of the public and the lack of experience in navigating the artistic path made the young girl sink into discomfort, fatigue and once wanted to stop. She thought about giving up singing to study nursing, a safer and more stable option.

Reaching out to the big sea to conquer the dream of music:

In 2018, Minh Nhu and her family moved to the US to settle down. This was a major turning point, marking the birth of the stage name Myra Tran that the public knows today. In the new country, Myra Tran had to spend a while struggling to find a direction. Although life is associated with going to school and helping with household chores, the passion for singing never goes out. She continued her singing activities in the Vietnamese diaspora, especially through the Thuy Nga Center, and nurtured her dream of conquering the American big stage.

In 2019, Myra Tran decided to try her hand at one of the most prestigious music competitions on the planet: the 17th season of American Idol. Right in the audition round, the powerful performance of the song One Night Only created a fever on social networks. Her soaring voice, skillful handling technique, and confident style made the star judges, especially Katy Perry and Lionel Richie, give "winged" praise.

Although she is not a new face to Vietnamese audiences, Myra Tran still makes Vietnamese fans proud when she excellently enters the Top 40 of American Idol. This is an eloquent testament to her strength and talent, helping her overcome her guilt and controversy in her hometown. However, after this great success, her musical career in the US market was quite quiet, not making much of a significant mark.

Brilliant revival on the Vietnamese mask stage:

After a period of quiet activity in the US, Myra Tran returned to Vietnam in 2022 and participated in the program The Masked Singer Vietnam with mascot Lady May. This is considered a spectacular comeback and the most important milestone to help her affirm her position in the hearts of the Vietnamese public.

From the first episode, the performance of the song All by myself caused an explosion, making the image of Lady May with a thick voice, internal strength and the ability to reach melancholy high notes become covered all over social media platforms. Throughout the show, Lady May/Myra Tran continuously created feverish performances, diverse in styles, from ballads to musicals to R&B, worthy of the nickname "Queen of High Notes." Despite stopping at the Top 3 overall, Myra Tran's reputation has been revived brilliantly.

After the show, Myra Tran was more active, getting rid of the image of a singer who only stood in one place singing love songs. She challenged herself with exciting choreography, tried to practice to refresh herself, and even suffered a minor injury. She always wants to experience more and bring the audience the best quality music products.

Try and stumble at the American voice:

In 2025, Myra Tran continues her journey to conquer international heights when participating in the Hidden Face round of The Voice USA (28th season). She shared that The Voice has been a dream since she was a child, and she wants to take this opportunity to make her family and country proud.

At the Blind Audition, Myra Tran performed the song Symphony by the group Clean Bandit. With a familiar internal voice, she brought a more novel mix to this masterpiece. However, despite the support of the audience at the studio, not a single Coach (including Michael Bublé, Reba McEntire, Niall Horan and Snoop Dogg) chose Myra Tran.

Being eliminated in the first round was a big shock. Myra Tran burst into tears, but still received wholehearted comfort and encouragement from the coaches. Snoop Dogg walked on stage to hug and encourage her, affirming: "Today, I've made them proud." Coach Michael Bublé said that Myra's unsuccessful contest was due to the outdated song selection and treatment, not in accordance with current international standards, not because of the vocals.

After the performance was broadcast, Myra Tran apologized to the audience for not showing her best performance. She promised to listen to all suggestions, hone her expertise further, and affirmed that the contest is only a small part of her long-term music career.
