In a ruling issued on April 2, 2026, Judge Lewis J. Liman ruled to remove most of the content of Blake Lively's lawsuit against co-star and director Justin Baldoni.
According to court documents obtained by Page Six, Judge Lewis Liman decided to dismiss 10 of the 13 charges made by Ryan Reynolds' muse. The list of dismissed charges includes the most serious ones: harassment, defamation and conspiracy to cause harm.
Immediately after the verdict, Justin Baldoni's legal team could not hide their joy. Sharing with the media, they affirmed that this was a fair result after the court had carefully reviewed the huge amount of evidence and current legal regulations.
"We are grateful to the court for this thorough review. The allegations of harassment were inherently heavy, and the fact that they were dismissed was a testament to my client's innocence. We are ready to present defense arguments for the rest of the trial at the upcoming trial," Baldoni said.
The most controversial point in this ruling is why the "sexual harassment" allegation was dismissed. Judge Liman determined that, during the making of It Ends With Us, Blake Lively participated as an independent contractor rather than an employee.
This delimitation of identity carries tremendous legal weight. On this basis, the judge held that the actress was not eligible to sue for sexual harassment under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This is the core law that protects workers from discrimination and harassment in the formal work environment.
Blake Lively's side immediately had a steely response. Her lawyer emphasized that this dismissal does not mean that Justin Baldoni is innocent. Instead, this is purely a "technical factor" related to the legal status of A-list stars in Hollywood. They argue that misconduct still exists, just that it cannot be tried in the name of the Civil Rights Act for ordinary employees.
Despite losing 10 charges, Blake Lively's "game" is not over. The Court still retains 3 important contents to continue the trial on May 18: Breach of contract, Retaliation, Aiding and abetting retaliatory acts.
Ryan Reynolds' legal team insists the case will now focus on the "toxic media campaign" that Baldoni's side allegedly carried out to destroy her reputation. According to the original lawsuit filed at the end of 2024, Blake Lively seeks at least $161 million in compensation for losses of income and honor caused by attacks from the director during the film's promotion.
This lawsuit is the culmination of simmering conflicts since It Ends With Us began filming. Blake Lively once accused Justin Baldoni of creating a toxic work environment and harassing behavior during filming. On the contrary, the male director also made a "-for-tat move" when he sued Blake Lively and his wife Ryan Reynolds for $400 million in compensation last year, but this lawsuit was dismissed by the court in June 2025.
Blake Lively's side is currently looking forward to the day of testimony. She wants to shed light on the form of "online revenge" – a sophisticated type of attack in the digital age that she considers herself a victim of. Her goal is not only to provide financial compensation but also to set a precedent to protect other artists from smear campaigns after they spoke out about set safety.
