The BOF band, consisting of 5 members Jun Pham, BB Tran, ST Son Thach, Bui Cong Nam and Kay Tran, officially released their debut MV No Fair. BOF is a collection of 5 outstanding talents from the show Anh Trai Vuot Ngan Chong Gai.
Before their official debut, the group released a music video for the brand. With all the famous faces, BOF already had a huge fan base before debuting. However, BOF's debut was met with many controversies from management to promoting the new song. When the MV No Fair was released, the debate still did not stop.
No Fair is a song composed by Bui Cong Nam - a member of BOF, belonging to the Rap - R&B genre. Bui Cong Nam tells the story of a guy who devotes all his love to someone he usually loves but in return is indifference and coldness.
The song's melody was commented to be similar to Bong Bong Bang Bang - the song that made Jun Pham and ST iconic, when they were still members of 365daband. No Fair has a lively, catchy melody and an EDM vibe combined with an ancient spirit. This made the song like a "dupe" of the most viewed song in Vietnam. However, when placing this melody under a modern Kpop-style MV like No Fair, the audience reacted in the opposite way.
Although BOF showed its "willingness to spend" by bringing a new image, building 5 different villains, telling the "hidden corners" behind these characters, viewers still could not imagine what the message was. The visuals have caused controversy since the teaser. The members wear heavy makeup, wearing colorful clothes. Combined with the music, it creates a confusing mismatch.
Despite having a large fan base, after the MV was released, BOF faced a series of criticisms. Even fans did not accept the old, outdated Kpop formula and out-of-place music. Both the music and the visuals were not highly appreciated, even criticized as "cringe" more than the musical disaster Pickleball by Do Phu Quy. Once again, reality shows that this type of bo.y group lineup is not popular with audiences in the Vietnamese market.
As the gathering place of the hottest male artists in Vietnamese showbiz today, the documentary film Anh Trai has received a wave of heat that continues to rise. The documentary film Anh Trai "Say Hi": The Villain Who Creates the Hero has a duration of 2 hours, recreating the explosive performances and enthusiastic atmosphere of the audience in 4 concert nights, while also revealin.g some "backstage secrets" and reflections from the Anh Trai cast.
The highlight of "Say Hi" Brother: The Villain Who Makes the Hero is the performances. Hits like Catch Me If You Can, Star Rank A, Walk, First Love Too Much, Sincerely... are vividly recreated with many new camera angles and visual effects, lighting,... bringing a meticulous, satisfying visual experience. The sound of the performances is carefully polished, combined with the quality of the theater speaker system, helping viewers to easily "immerse" themselves in the performance atmosphere.
The film learns the "success formula" of music documentaries when it combines performance - behind the scenes, inspirational sharing and investment in cinematic art.
However, it is quite regrettable that the musical journey in the film lacks songs with family themes such as Bao Loi Con Chua Noi or national pride such as Khat Vong La Nguoi Viet. Besides, it is quite clear to see the "artistic" goal of the crew when the duration of the performances and the audience atmosphere in the 2 concert nights at My Dinh Stadium are more dominant than the 2 concert nights in Ho Chi Minh City.
In return, at the time of airing, after less than 24 hours of showing, "Say Hi": The Villain Who Creates the Hero earned nearly 6 billion VND, an impressive opening compared to "The Time Keeper" (12 billion after one week) or Sky Tour Movie (5.8 billion VND).
Despite its limitations, the film marks a big step forward in bringing a reality TV show to the big screen for the first time, demonstrating learning from major entertainment industries such as Korea, Europe and America, while opening up development potential for the performance industry in Vietnam.
