Detective Kien: The Headless Case marks the return of Victor Vu to the big screen. The spin-off film from the billion-dollar blockbuster The Last Wife features a star-studded cast including Dinh Ngoc Diep, Quoc Huy, Quoc Anh... and the audience is also curious about the new face Minh Anh.
Her brief "teaser" segments in the teaser trailer of Detective Kien: Headless Case attracted a lot of attention from the audience. Minh Anh (full name Doan Minh Anh) was born in 2008, and has been in the entertainment industry since she was a chil.d. In 2015, when she was only 7 years old, Minh Anh had already acted in dozens of different large and small commercials, working with famous brands such as Vinamilk, Knorr, Milo, Suzuki, Koreno noodles... That was also the time when Minh Anh was oriented to become a chil.d model, participating in a number of contests related to the fields of beauty and talent.
By 2017, Minh Anh had won the title of Actress Champion, an important milestone for her to start pursuing acting. Since then, Minh Anh began to appear in many famous film projects. In cinema, she participated in Run Away and Think by director Ham Tran, Super Thief by the duo Namcito - Bao Nhan... but did not attract explosive attention. At the same time, Minh Anh continued to become the 1st runner-up of the 2019 Vietnam Ao Dai Ambassador contest and won many other awards, proving her versatility and diligence despite her young ag.e.
After nearly a decade of absence from the big screen, Minh Anh made a surprising return when director Victor Vu chose her to play in the blockbuster Detective Kien: Headless Case. In the film, she plays Nga - the niece of Mrs. Hai (played by Dinh Ngoc Diep), an important character whose whereabouts detective Kien (played by Quoc Huy) promises to find at all costs. In the teaser, Nga's character wearing Vietnamese clothes with a mysterious expression attracts viewers, both beautiful and unpredictable. In addition, the close-up scene when Minh Anh has a nosebleed, her panicked expression shows her "not-so-average" beauty. This role marks a major turning point in Minh Anh's career, especially when she has the opportunity to collaborate with a leading director in Vietnam.
To get this role, Minh Anh went through a challenging casting process. She once shared that she thought she had failed after 2 auditions, but was unexpectedly trusted by director Victor Vu to take on this important role. Minh Anh could not hide her joy when she played Detective Kien: "Being chosen by director Victor Vu after many castings is truly a dream come true". In particular, her classic beauty with a plump, pretty face at the ag.e of 17 helped her score strongly in this not-so-easy ancient costume.
Recently, at the 5th Green Hair and Ao Dai event, Minh Anh had the opportunity to join the crew of Detective Kien: Headless Case, showin.g of.f her beauty in traditional Vietnamese costumes. Her image was praised by the audience, showing Victor Vu's excellent and anticipated eye for choosing people on screen.
Also through Detective Kien: Headless Case, Minh Anh hopes to become a real artist, capable of conquering the audience with talent and dedication, and at the same time gain more confidence to "invade" other fields such as beauty. Hopefully, after the wave of rookies exploding on the Vietnamese screen in the first months of 2025, Minh Anh will become the next name to attract attention.
Regarding the level of investment, Detective Kien: The Headless Case, the producer has sewn 1,000 ancient costumes to serve the performance. Actress and producer Dinh Ngoc Diep shared about the meticulousness and seriousness in preparing costumes for the movie "Detective Kien: The Headless Case": "800 - 1,000 costumes, all hand-sewn by the film crew, not a modern film that can be borrowed or bought easily. For all the costumes in the film, Mr. Ghia is the one who dyed each piece of fabric. If we buy fabric from the market and sew it, it will be new, but it will look fake on screen. In the film, the fabric must be bleached, then washed, then dyed to be as he intended. Although this is not a historical film, the crew has carefully researched the costumes based on the Nguyen Dynasty context, not only showing social class but also carrying Vietnamese cultural identity.
Mr. Victor Vu and Art Director Ghia Ci Fam always respect the solemnity, sophistication, and clear hierarchy between social classes, but still have many unique innovations in creating cinematic art. The five-panel shirt of the common people and the nobility. The conical hat and turban for men and women when going out. Workers wear the simpler four-panel shirt. The wealthy class wears the silk ao dai, the non quai thao or the turban.
The way director Victor Vu's production team expresses creativity in cinema is always within the framework of promoting traditional beauty. "I always keep the mindset: I have to research as thoroughly as possible," the director born in 1975 shared.
The number of costumes and costumes in "Detective Kien: The Headless Case" can only be described as "huge". The costume team needs to prepare for both the main and secondary lines. The actors wear at least three layers of clothing every day, up to five layers, no matter how ho.t or cold the weather is, they cannot remove or add a single layer of fabric. Hundreds of people have hundreds of sets of clothes, shoes, hats,... all of which are newly made and cannot be purchased ready-made.
"Every night, the costume team has to stay up late, wake up early, dye each piece of fabric, make each accessory by hand, and every day have to wash, iron, and process the color of hundreds of costumes. The team's staff is also very limited, three or four people in a team cannot handle hundreds of different tasks. Some people just take a nap and then continue working. Ancient costumes not only help the audience understand more about the culture of each period but also create a unique mark for each film," Dinh Ngoc Diep confided.
The couple Victor Vu - Dinh Ngoc Diep also affirmed that 2025 is a very special occasion as it marks the 50th birthday of the director of the film "The Last Wife". The male director confided: "I have also been making films for a long time and see that Vietnamese cinema is growing stronger and stronger. I hope that the cinema will develop more and more, with more voices and colors from filmmakers".
