Erlang Shen, also known as Erlang Zhenjun, Yang Jian or Xiao Sheng, is the second son of Yang Tianyou (a mortal) and Daoji Fairy (the Jade Emperor's younger sister). In terms of relationship, this character is the Jade Emperor's nephew.

The special thing about Erlang Shen is the third eye on his forehead, called Yin-Yang Eye, which has the ability to see things that ordinary people cannot see. The eye is like a mirror that reflects demons. No matter how much Sun Wukong transforms, he cannot fool it.

In the novel Journey to the West, when Sun Wukong caused chaos in the heavenly palace, one hundred thousand heavenly soldiers could not stop him. Bodhisattva Guanyin recommended Erlang Shen to the Jade Emperor, and then Yang Jian immediately followed up with the order to subdue the demon.

At Hoa Qua Son, Nhi Lang Than and his subordinates had a great battle with Ton Ngo Khong with no clear winner. The character Erlang Shen has a handsome appearance, tall and muscular body, and an upright demeanor. During filming in 1982, director Yang Jie saw a shortage of actors and asked Lin Zhiqian - then the film crew's martial arts director - to try on the costume. When the actor stepped out, the director exclaimed: "This is Erlang Shen."

In real life, the actor is not only handsome and tall, but also has a strong temperament, his appearance is very suitable for a martial arts role. He comes from a song and dance troupe of Fujian province, and was discovered by director Yang Jie when the film crew started filming in Quanzhou (Fujian). He is a student of the famous martial artist Wan Lai Qing - who was awarded the title "Invincible in the World".

At that time, Lam Chi-Khim was both a martial arts choreographer for the actors in the troupe and a supporting actor. In addition to the role of Erlang Shen, he also played the role of the Demon King of Chaos in Journey to the West.
