Jessica Jung sparked intense controversy when she broke down in tears while singing a cover of SNSD's hit song at a concert in Vietnam. While fans defended her, South Korean netizens mocked the singer, accusing her of deliberately exploiting her former group's name.
On April 18th, Jessica Jung's concert in Vietnam attracted a large number of loyal fans who flocked to see their idol in person. During the show, besides familiar solo songs like Wonderland and Beep Beep, the most explosive moment was when Jessica recreated her "golden era" with her former group SNSD. This was a rare occasion where she directly performed a mashup of legendary hits such as Gee, Genie, The Boys, and Mr. Mr. However, the peak of controversy came during her performance of her debut song, Into The New World. As the first notes rang out, Jessica couldn't control her emotions; her eyes welled up with tears, and she looked like she was about to cry.
The clip capturing this moment immediately went viral on Korean online forums, sparking a barrage of sarcastic and harsh comments from netizens. Most opinions questioned the singer's tears, deeming the act fake and contradictory. Many harshly pointed out that she had voluntarily left the group in 2014 to prioritize her personal business ventures, and therefore, her current display of nostalgia was seen as "acting" to cling to her past fame. Korean netizens even dug up controversies surrounding her two novels, *Shine* and *Bright*, which she herself wrote, with content allegedly alluding to and speaking about former bandmates who had oppressed her.
The wave of outrage intensified when some viewers revisited the question of whether Jessica's departure had caused a negative domino effect for her junior group f(x). Some argued that investors at the time withdrew funding from the 4Walls album promotion because they feared Krystal would follow her sister's lead and leave the company, causing f(x) to be put on hold and leaving the remaining members to suffer the bitter consequences.
But that's not all; the "Ice Princess'" performance skills have also been scrutinized. Many people commented that she no longer maintains her vocal prowess, and some even suspected that she sang over pre-recorded tracks (AR) for up to 80% of the show.
Jessica's choice to perform the ballad version of "Into The New World" further escalated the tension. This version was originally released and performed by SNSD after Jessica left the group, symbolizing healing and the shared pain of the remaining eight members and their fans. Borrowing this very version for a performance was seen as insensitive, if not deliberately reopening old wounds to gain attention. Conversely, some fans defended her, arguing that Jessica had undoubtedly paid royalties to SM Entertainment for legal permission to perform, and that she had every right to sing songs associated with her youth.
Looking back at history, Jessica's departure from SNSD on September 30, 2014, remains one of the most shocking events in K-pop history. While Jessica accused the company and the other eight members of unfairly forcing her to leave the group, SM Entertainment claimed she was the one who proactively wanted to leave because she was too focused on her own brand, BLANC & ECLARE, neglecting the group's schedule. After more than a decade, while SNSD has maintained its status as a national girl group with a brilliant 15th anniversary celebration, Jessica's solo career has been fraught with controversy and scandal. Her continuous use of details reminiscent of her former group in her solo works and on stage has further distanced her from the SNSD fanbase, making reconciliation difficult.
