Song Mino is on trial for a military service scandal, facing a potential 1.5-year prison sentence. The idol admitted his wrongdoing, bowed his head in apology to the public, and his career is at risk of complete collapse.
The case involving Song Mino (a member of the group WINNER) is becoming the focus of attention as the idol officially appeared in court for a military service scandal. According to Koreaboo, the Seoul Western District Court held a hearing on April 21st, with Song Mino and his manager, surnamed Lee, in attendance.
According to the prosecution, Song Mino allegedly failed to comply with regulations while serving as a public service employee at a welfare facility in Mapo District, Seoul, from March 2023 to December 2024. Specifically, he is accused of being absent without permission for 102 days out of a total of 430 working days, equivalent to nearly a quarter of his service time. Furthermore, even when present, the singer was criticized for his lack of professionalism, frequently leaving early, or failing to complete his duties, including handling citizen complaints.
In court, Song Mino admitted to all charges. Given these violations, the prosecution requested a sentence of 1 year and 6 months in prison. The incident quickly shocked public opinion because military service in South Korea is considered a mandatory responsibility and carries great honor for men.
Appearing before the media, Song Mino attracted attention with his tired appearance, poor complexion, and changed physique. Upon leaving the courtroom, he bowed in apology and stated, "I sincerely apologize to the judge and everyone who attended the trial. As a young Korean man, I failed to fulfill my mandatory military service obligations seriously and completely. I suffer from bipolar disorder and panic disorder, but I understand that these illnesses cannot be a reason or excuse to justify my wrongdoing. As someone who receives much public affection, failing to set a good example and exposing such shameful images and actions has deeply affected me. All that remains now is regret for my choices. Currently, I am actively treating my health problems. I hope to recover soon, and if given the opportunity to enlist again, I will fulfill my duty seriously and completely. Once again, I sincerely apologize to everyone."
The singer's lawyer also requested the court to consider mitigating factors such as his mental health and remorseful attitude when making the final judgment. However, with his admission of wrongdoing, Song Mino's career is considered to be facing a serious risk of collapse. Not only does he face the possibility of imprisonment and a criminal record, but he also risks being ostracized by the public.
Previously, Song Mino's scandal was exposed in late 2024 when Dispatch published a series of investigative articles. According to these articles, the idol was accused of frequent absences, signs of being protected by superiors, and even falsifying attendance records. Several colleagues also spoke out to confirm his unprofessional work habits.
Although his management explained that Song Mino suffered from issues such as social anxiety disorder and panic attacks, subsequent evidence raised doubts among the public. Dispatch published photos of the singer attending a party in Gangwon in August 2023, appearing completely relaxed and showing no signs of serious illness.
