Thuong Tin 'rescues' Thanh Tung, and 'reunites' with Bao Khuong in a new work

The comedian, who was a contemporary of Bao Quoc, was once so rich that he "couldn't make enough money," now has to live in a rented house and has Thuong Tin's benefactor pay off his debts. What happened to comedian Thanh Tung that made him lose all his assets?

Thanh Tung was born in 1955 in Saigon, the nephew of musician Truc Phuong. Although he had a talent for singing, he lacked confidence. From 1976 to 1978, he participated in mass arts, quickly gaining attention for his soulful voice, and was later accepted as a disciple by famous singer Duy Khanh. He was once the lead singer of the Hau River Singing Troupe.

The big turning point came when comedy was popular. Thanh Tung joined the Huong Mien Nam troupe. When Duy Phuong temporarily stopped, Bao Quoc unexpectedly chose Thanh Tung – who had never performed comedy before – to replace him. The first time he went on stage, the nervousness made him stand still, his eyes looking up at the ceiling, unintentionally creating a charming laugh, opening the path for his comedy career.

Guided by Bao Quoc, Thanh Tung quickly fell in love and decided to leave singing to focus entirely on comedy. When Bao Quoc changed direction, he teamed up with Mai Son, creating the famous Mai Son - Thanh Tung comedy group, becoming one of the most popular couples on the comedy stage in the 1980s and 1990s. His intelligent, natural acting style and flexible improvisation ability helped him become a familiar face. He also possessed a distinctive voice that was highly appreciated by Mrs. Bay Nam (mother of the famous actress Kim Cuong), placing him in the group of four distinctive voices of the Southern stage.

During its heyday, the Mai Son - Thanh Tung group performed dozens of shows each week, sometimes performing at 7-10 venues in a row, and were invited to tour internationally in Europe and the US. The income at that time was countless. Despite being famous, Thanh Tung always humbly considered himself a "supporting actor". After Mai Son left the group, he founded his own comedy troupe with dozens of members, one of the largest comedy groups in Vietnam, to create opportunities for young artists such as Thuy Muoi, Nghinh Loc, Kieu Ngan...

In addition to his passion for his profession, Thanh Tung is also known as a kind person, willing to help colleagues in difficulty. He once represented a philanthropist and donated 150 million VND to support artist Mac Can who was in dire straits, and many other artists such as Phi Phung and Nghinh Loc also received support from him.

At his peak, Thanh Tung was a wealthy comedian, owning a house and a car. However, a serious business mistake that he admitted was "the biggest of his life" caused him to go bankrupt, lose all his assets, had to sell his house to pay off debts and move to rent a room.

Even though he had to start over, he still persevered in performing, acting in TV series and web dramas. However, his current salary is only a few hundred thousand VND per episode, not enough to cover his expenses. Recently, the story of him owing artist Bao Khuong 20 million VND and being paid by musician To Hieu caused an emotional stir. Currently, when there are no shows, his wife has to cover all living expenses.

After the incident, Thanh Tung turned to religion as a spiritual support, keeping his mind at peace by chanting sutras every day. Even during the difficult COVID-19 pandemic, he still shared food and money to support the poor. At the age of 68, he is still lucid, healthy and optimistic, just wishing for peace and dedication. Recently, he received a long-term TV project. Notably, on October 23, musician To Hieu also hinted at plans to invite Thanh Tung and Bao Khuong to participate in upcoming comedy products, and suggested inviting Thuong Tin as well, opening up opportunities for these veteran artists to reunite on stage.
