Kang Seung-yoon, also known by his stage names Kang and Seung, is a singer-songwriter under YG Entertainment. After rising to fame through the Superstar K2 audition program, he debuted as a solo artist in 2013.
A year later, his management company's victory in the survival show WIN: Who Is Next made Kang Seung-yoon the "leader" of the popular boy band WINNER.
Since the beginning of his career, he has proven his ability with a series of impressive achievements. Kang Seung-yoon is even on the list of promising young artists in the Korean entertainment industry thanks to his quality personal products.
Kang Seung-yoon was born in 1994 in Busan, which is considered the "cradle" of young Korean talents such as Jungkook, Jimin (BTS), Minhyun of NU'EST or Aron from Oh my girl. Living in the largest port city in Korea, since childhood, Kang Seung-yoon had to endure hardship and face many family incidents. Then, the appearance of the music competition Superstar K2 seemed to awaken in him the desire to change his real life.
Kang Seung-yoon's childhood was not perfect as he grew up in a broken family, his parents divorced when he was in elementary school. At that time, the house only had his mother and three sons, they relied on a small grocery store to make a living. As the eldest brother, Kang Seung-yoon always tried to share the burden with his mother. However, the image of a strong student was lost when Kang was betrayed by his best friend, he gradually withdrew and dropped out of school for a while.
Throughout his teenage years, his mother was the support and motivation for the male singer. The image of her being stuck in life, sitting alone in the corner of the house drinking alcohol, urged him to overcome his psychological barriers and want to change his living conditions.
Born into a family with no artistic tradition, Kang's passion for music had long been ignited. He began playing instruments in eighth grade and graduated from Busan High School of Arts with a major in classical guitar. However, seriously pursuing art brought many challenges to Kang Seung-yoon's family. Sometimes, everyone had to go hungry just to pay for his tuition and equipment.
After overcoming his psychological shock, Kang Seung-yoon signed up for Superstar K2 in 2010 in hopes of finding his own path to success. At the age of sixteen, he achieved his first success when he was among the top four contestants of the show. Kang's journey into the arts also began from here.
Kang Seung-yoon entered the weekly elimination round with 150 other contestants. Initially, he was considered a potential candidate, predicted to be in the list of ten finalists. However, Kang only received moderate scores, his perfect performance could not avoid harsh reactions from the judges. Not only that, Kang also received a "storm" of anger from the audience when he entered the top four. Although Seung was highly appreciated by the judges in this round, he was eliminated due to low audience votes.
However, the last song that Kang Seung-yoon performed, Instinctively, later became the soul of the competition with the most sales, "far surpassing" the products of other contestants. After Superstar K2, many entertainment companies sought Seung but all were for money and fame. In the end, he decided to join YG Entertainment with the belief that he would be treated seriously as well as equipped with the necessary skills.
Before signing with YG Entertainment, Kang Seung-yoon had already made a name for himself as a singer. He released two singles, I'll Write You a Letter and Instinctively, both of which topped digital music charts.
Furthermore, the song Instinctively also brought him the first prestigious award in his career, Gaon Charts K-Pop 2010, for the Best New Artist category. This helped Kang Seung-yoon be considered a "monster rookie" at that time. A year later, the male singer also tried his hand at the film industry when participating in the national comedy High Kick Through the Roof. He played the role of a silly young man who believed the earth was square and dreamed of becoming president.
Shortly after, YG Entertainment announced that Seungyoon would be debuting as a solo artist. The company originally planned to release the single Wild and Young, written by Teddy Park, but plans changed abruptly and it was released as It Rains instead.
Looking back at the early days of his career, Kang, a small boy, has made experts and the public acknowledge his talent. Kang Seung-yoon is like a "precious gem", still shining wherever he is.
Kang Seung-yoon, Nam Tae-hyun, Song Min-ho, Lee Seung-hoon, and Kim Jin-woo formed Team A and signed up for YG Entertainment's reality survival show WIN: Who Is Next. WIN: Who Is Next is a competition between Teams A and B to determine the next boy band to "succeed" BigBang and "steer" the company's fate for the next eight years.
After nine episodes, Kang's group A won, and the five boys debuted as WINNER as planned. Kang Seung-yoon took over as leader, replacing Mino due to injury.
Most K-pop idols understand the harshness of survival shows, but Kang Seung-yoon overcame two "death doors" when he was just over twenty years old. That success was the lever that helped him have the motivation to move forward faster with his career later on.
It was not until August 2014 that WINNER officially debuted with the song Empty. The song quickly took the top spot on ten Korean music charts, bringing the group its first trophy.
Kang Seung-yoon's activities at that time were also a sign of WINNER's return. Realizing the "long slide" that the group was facing, as the "locomotive", the male singer decided to temporarily suspend his personal activities and focus on investing in new products. In 2019, the boys once again made a splash with the album WE. In which, the title song Ah Yeah composed by Kang Seung-yoon "hit the roof" of the Melon and iTunes music charts in four countries.
Despite the continuous release of new products by "heavyweight" seniors like EXO and BTS, Ah Yeah has maintained his ranking for a long time. With the miraculous revival he brought to WINNER, the public believes that nothing can be difficult for Kang Seung-yoon, who is known as the ideal leader of the third generation of Kpop.
In addition to his musical activities, Kang Seung-yoon also sought opportunities to affirm his talent when appearing on the show King of Masked Singers under the nickname Joo Yoon Bal (Chow Yun Fat). With any song, he can skillfully handle the high and low notes, thereby creating highlights for the song. Moreover, Kang Seung-yoon also makes each melody and lyric touch the hearts of listeners by expressing his sincere emotions.
Not stopping there, Seung's performance was also commented to always bring a comfortable, relaxing feeling. That is what created trust in the public, increasing the appeal of later music products. Winning six consecutive times, he achieved the highest record among the idols who participated in the program. For that reason, Kang was named "The youngest King" to achieve this achievement.
While the United States honors Angelina Jolie for her humanitarian work, the Korean public also constantly praises Kang Seung-yoon for his noble heart. In addition to financial support, he is also a spiritual support for disadvantaged children. Having experienced a difficult childhood, Kang Seung-yoon easily sympathizes with children. At the age of eighteen, the male singer adopted three African children, becoming the youngest Kpop idol to do so.
Not only that, when the company donated to Seungil Hope Foundation, Kang secretly sent another nearly thirty million won. Seungil Foundation CEO Sean revealed this information and shared that the guy always does good things in secret.
After ten years of ups and downs since SuperStar K2, Kang Seung-yoon has grown and improved, breaking all the initial prejudices. The male singer has gained fame thanks to his diligence and unique voice, and is also considered an exemplary artist in behavior and the most ideal leader for the third generation of Kpop. After all, Kang Seung-yoon has become a more perfect version of himself, just as he had expected.
