The leader of a "hacker" ring targeting rich Koreans, including Jungkook (BTS), has been arrested, causing a stir in public opinion for appropriating assets worth "hundreds of billions of dong".
An international cyber-hacking case has just been revealed, involving a Chinese citizen (A) who is accused of leading a network targeting wealthy and famous individuals in Korea. The suspect was arrested in Thailand and extradited to Seoul, in which the victims include CEOs, business directors and artist Jungkook (BTS).
According to information from the Korean Ministry of Justice, from August 2023 to January 2024, A established a hacker organization overseas, conducting illegal intrusions into the systems of Korean mobile carriers to collect personal information of many people. This is a sophisticated strategy, aiming to use sensitive data to appropriate assets of wealthy victims.
The modus operandi of the criminal group is considered sophisticated and organized. They use stolen personal information to register phone numbers in other people's names, then access the victims' financial accounts and e-wallets. From there, the hackers transfer money and appropriate virtual assets. The total damage caused by these incidents is estimated at more than 38 billion won, equivalent to more than 720 billion VND.
One of the most notable cases involved BTS member Jungkook. Shortly after his military enlistment in January last year, Jungkookâs stock account was hacked, resulting in the theft of 33,500 HYBE shares, worth approximately 8.4 billion won (equivalent to 160 billion VND). Of these, the hackers sold 500 shares worth approximately 126 million won to a third party.
However, BTS's management company Big Hit Music promptly discovered the unusual behavior and froze Jungkook's securities account, preventing the risk of further asset loss. At the same time, the singer's legal team quickly filed a lawsuit to reclaim the misappropriated shares. The Seoul Western District Court later ruled in Jungkook's favor, confirming that no legal transfer had taken place and ordering the buyer to return the shares.
In the pursuit of A, Seoul Metropolitan Police investigators, in coordination with Interpol, tracked the suspect and discovered that A had entered Thailand in April. The South Korean government requested Thai authorities to temporarily detain the suspect for extradition â a legal mechanism that allows for emergency detention before a formal extradition request is made. A was detained in Thailand for two weeks, before being handed over to the South Korean side for further investigation.
The case not only caused property damage but also raised concerns about cybersecurity in South Korea. Notably, the case also raised questions about the protection of digital assets and stocks of famous individuals. The fact that Jungkook's stock account was hacked while the singer was absent due to military service shows that wealthy individuals and famous artists are easy targets.
Currently, A is being held in Seoul and is awaiting trial. Korean authorities are also expanding their investigation to determine the scale and scope of the hacker group's activities, in order to prevent similar incidents in the future. This case has not only attracted public attention but also serves as a warning about cybersecurity risks, especially for individuals with large assets or operating in popular fields.
The cyber-hacking incident led by A has had serious consequences, from stealing hundreds of billions of dong worth of Jungkookâs stocks to appropriating the assets of CEOs and wealthy individuals. The legal ruling in Jungkookâs favor and the extradition of the suspect from Thailand to Korea is a testament to the efforts of the authorities to protect the rights of victims and crack down on high-tech crimes.
