In the movie, Tokyo is a Korean who immigrated to South Korea. She is approached by Professor (Yoo Ji Tae), to recruit into a band of robbers, planning to steal 4 trillion won from the unified mint.
Although the Korean "Money Heist" caused a lot of controversy, but Jeon Jong Seo is considered one of the rising stars of the Korean screen, his career has the opportunity to go far after the role of Tokyo.
Not only attracted by the new content compared to the Spanish version, but "Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area" is also marked by the acting of the famous cast including Park Hae Soo, Yoo Ji Tae, Yunjin Kim ,...
In particular, the role of "Tokyo" by 27-year-old actress Jeon Jong Seo (also known as Rachel Jun) left many impressions. Jeon Jong Seo is known as a rising star of Korean cinema with an illustrious and admirable career that she built in a short time.
Dropped out of college
While most Korean stars study acting at universities, Jeon Jong Seo chose a different path.
Jeon Jong Seo was born on July 5, 1994 in Seoul, South Korea, but later moved to Canada to settle down with his family. At the age of high school, she returned to her hometown and entered Sejong University, majoring in Film.
Jong Seo should be recognized as an actor who has undergone formal training. However, without completing her studies, she withdrew from the school and pursued a more liberal path.
According to the website of the Korean Film Council, Jong Seo stopped studying after a year because he did not feel interested in the lecture. She wants to have real experiences.
Famous in the first movie
After joining her first agency, she auditioned in 2017 for the movie "Burning" (2018). "Burning" is the highly anticipated work of director Lee Chang Dong with the participation of veteran actors Yoo Ah In and Steven Yeun. After months of auditions, Jeon Jong Seo beat out over 2000 actresses and got the free-spirited Haemi.
Sharing with Hollywood Reporter, director Lee explained why he chose an inexperienced actor to play the lead role in the film: "When I saw her, she seemed to have a very childlike innocence, but at the same time, she feels as if something much bigger is on the other side of that innocence."
The film premiered at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival and became the first Korean film to be shortlisted for nine short films competing for the "Best Foreign Language Film" award at the Oscars. Jeon received instant acclaim after debuting and made the Hollywood Reporter's list of 15 International Breakthrough Talents of 2018.
Korean media commented that the 28-year-old actor has a strange face, cold and arrogant attitude, very suitable for cinema. The beauty and acting of the star surnamed Jeon are fully exploited through the role of a gentle and romantic neighbor Shin Hae Mi.
The successful film helped her quickly rise to the ranks of a promising actress, known as the "new muse" of Korean cinema.
Collaborate with big names in Hollywood
After starring in Netflix's hit horror film "The Call" (2020) as Young Sook (a role that brought her best actress at the 57th Baeksang Arts Awards), Jeon landed her first Hollywood roles with Ana Lily Amirpour's "Mona Lisa" and "Blood Moon". Jeon Jong Seo had the opportunity to work with Zac Efron and Kate Hudson. The film also entered the Venice Film Festival in 2021.
Recently, she returned to the Korean big screen with the 2021 romantic comedy "Nothing Serious" with Son Seok Koo.
Dating the director of "The Call"
Jeon Jong Seo is currently dating "The Call" director Lee Choong Hyun since 2021. The two fell in love while filming the hit horror movie. Jeon's management company, My Company, confirmed this information in December 2021. Specifically, the company said "the two have good feelings and recently started a romantic relationship".
Director Lee Choong Hyun is also quite open about this relationship. He shared, "While filming The Call, we naturally fell in love, and we started dating recently. Most of the people around me knew we were dating."
Jeon Jong Seo and her boyfriend are both highly regarded and are currently one of the most desirable talented couples in Korean cinema.
It can be said that "Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area" has brought Jeon Jong Seo's name to a new level.
Recently, the actress had an online interview with the media after the movie was broadcast.
Talking about the opening scene of the film, when Tokyo introduces herself as an ARMY (BTS fan) and dances to the choreography of the song "Dynamite", the actress said:
"I personally feel burdened when I have to dance to a famous song. I'm unfamiliar and embarrassed. But I reassured myself by thinking it's just a script to explain the plot.
I practiced as hard as I could. Fortunately, when the movie aired, the scene was cut shorter than the actual shot. I wasn't good at dancing and was clumsy, but I tried my best."
When asked about the similarities between himself and the character Tokyo, Jeon Jong Seo shared, "I think my real personality is very similar to Tokyo in the original movie. But there is also a point that I resemble Tokyo in the Korean version, that's it. I also really like idols."
In particular, Jeon Jong Seo surprised when revealing that, in real life, she is an avid fan of girl group Twice, instead of BTS as in the movie. She likes female idols much more than male idols.
Assuming that BTS is replaced by Twice in the movie, Jeon Jong Seo happily replied, "At that time, she will say: I am a fan of Twice. I want to learn the choreography and get an autograph from Momo."
Talking about the difference between the Korean version of the character Tokyo and the Spanish version, the actress shared that, in the original, Tokyo is sexy, sexier and always breaks the rules, but the Korean version of Tokyo is more emotional, reason and absolute confidence in the Professor's plan.
"The biggest difference of the Korean version of Tokyo is that the mind takes precedence over the appearance," commented Jeon Jong Seo.
Regarding the mixed reactions surrounding the content of the Korean "Money Heist" compared to the Spanish original, the actress expressed:
"I also have my likes and dislikes. Many of the original details are good, but there are also details in the remake that are better.
In the original, I think the charm and acting skills of each actor have been maximized.
So the beauty of the original "Money Heist" is in the acting, the charm, the emotional explosion, and it's a fun piece of work. The Korean version of "Money Heist" is more dramatic than glamorous. It's too early to say since it's only released part 1, but I think it'll be interesting to get to the end of the series."
The actress also revealed that part 2 of "Money Heist" Korean version that is about to be aired will be even more attractive than part 1.
