According to The Sun, the story of Miss Danette Burzlaff-Haag's journey to overcome adversity is not only touching but also a strong source of inspiration for many people.
At the ag.e of 10, a horrific incident changed Danette Burzlaff-Haagâs life forever. At an event her parents were hosting in Iowa, a faulty heater valve caused a gas leak. Seconds later, a fire engulfed the entire house, leaving her and her family with serious injuries. Danette suffered third-degree burns over 70% of her body and faced a series of life-threatening surgeries.
âI spent months in burn centers and had to undergo reconstructive surgery for 10 years,â Danette once shared. She endured more than 30 skin grafts, leaving her with permanent scars and indescribable pain. Throughout her school years, she had to wear bodysuits, braces, and masks to protect her damaged skin, which left her feeling isolated and unfit.
With scars all over her body, Danette once fell into despai.r, giving up her dream of becoming a beauty queen - something that seemed forever out of her reach. However, with perseverance, Danette picked herself up and changed her mind.
In 2019, she unexpectedly won the Miss Colorado beauty pageant, becoming the first woman with scars to achieve this prestigious title. At the same time, at the ag.e of 50, Danette is also one of the oldest contestants to be crowned.
In an interview with the Daily Star, Danette shared: "I have learned to see my scars as a symbol of strength, rather than shame. It is a victory over the stares, taunts and rejection I once endured."
The moment the crown was given to Danette Burzlaff-Haag was a symbol of victory, not only for Danette herself now but also for the 10-year-old gir.l who lost everything in the fateful event years ago.
Today, Miss Danette Burzlaff-Haag is not only a beauty icon, but also a pediatric nurse, life coach and author of the book "Beauty From Ashes: Transforming Wounds into Wisdom: Scars into Stars".
In this book, she recounts her turbulent life, affirming that no matter how crue.l life can be, inner strength can still turn pain into glory. Miss Colorado's story is proof that true beauty lies in resilience, the will to overcome difficulties and the ability to turn adversity into motivation to rise up.
In addition to Danette Burzlaff-Haag, the beauty world still has a beauty queen who suffered 85% burns to her body, making the public admire her will to live. That is Carol Mayer, who suffered burns to her body after a house fire that occurred 20 years ago, and she once faced a 50/50 chance of survival. Carol Mayer (53 years old) from Cairns, Queensland, Australia, was once Miss North Aspley (a local beauty pageant).
Carol appeared in a series of 'skimpy' photos with meaningful messages taken by British photographer Brian Cassey, these photos were just nominated for the Portrait of Humanity 2020 Awar.d, a photography awar.d organized by the British Journal of Photography.
Carol Mayer's portraits, titled "The Skin I'm In," are currently attracting a lot of attention.
Carol entered a beauty pageant in her youth and became Miss North Aspley (a local beauty pageant). Fate threw her into a crue.l challenge when Carol was trapped in a house fire in 2000, leaving her with permanent scars.
To this day, Carol still has no idea what caused the horrific fire and has no memory of how she and her then 18-month-old son survived it.
While her son was rescued in time and suffered no major injuries, his mother spent eight weeks in a coma in hospital and then nine months recovering from severe burns. In total, Carol underwent more than 100 major and mino.r surgeries.
Carol has been strong, overcoming the first years of her life filled with physical and mental turmoil. Now, 20 years after the incident that forever changed her life, she is ready to appear in the 'skimpy' portraits of photographer Brian Cassey. Her story is receiving public attention.
