Japan is probably a country that many people aspire to come to study and experience, but when they arrive, they can see the hardships in a distant cherry blossom land. The story of a Japanese international student below probably reflects the lives of countless other international students in Japan. Gives us a more multi-dimensional view of the lives of expatriates.
Alone in the land of cherry blossoms
Finishing high school at Nguyen Quang Dieu High School for the Gifted, Kim Ngoc (24 years old, from Dong Thap) asked her mother to let her study abroad in Japan. The land of the rising sun in Ngoc's eyes at that time was only pink, with skyscrapers, cherry blossoms in full bloom on the streets or subway trains running one after another.
With the desire to struggle to the "big sea", Ngoc plans to explore study abroad programs. After graduating, she went to the city to find a Japanese class on her own. Ngoc's parents forbade and worried for fear of their only daughter in a foreign land. But the female student still insisted: "At that time, I was very determined, I told my parents that I decided to go to Japan". Seeing the enthusiasm of the daughter, Ngoc's parents gradually surrendered.
Wet feet and dry feet came to Japan at the age of 18, feeling helpless and lost came to the young girl after only a few days. Ngoc does not know anyone, her voice is only babbling, she has to do everything by herself, from finding accommodation, buying furniture to spreading her CV to apply for a part-time job.
Due to no introduction, Ngoc's job application was rejected dozens of times. Until one day, only 1 shipping company accepted her to work as a porter. "It was a manual job, no need to speak Japanese. But in order to cover tuition fees, I had to accept it," Ngoc recalled.
Every day, after finishing school, Ngoc went back to the workshop and only finished her shift when it was late at night. After 2 months, she resigned because her job was too hard and moved to work as a cleaning staff in a shopping mall.
For the first time, Ngoc felt embarrassed to the chest when she wore a cleaning uniform on her body, while many other young people working in a clothing and cosmetic store were dressed and scented.
"I often buy lunch boxes in the evening at the supermarket because I get half the price and bring it to eat at noon the next day. At work there is a room for employees. I still remember that day when I sat down, friends Another staff member got up and left, suddenly feeling ashamed and embarrassed.
That time, I went home to cry with my mother, telling her: Come on, go home, you can't stay here anymore. Several times before, I would encourage you to do your best, but this time I just said: 'Give it all away, come back here, I can take care of you for the rest of my life'.
When I heard my mother say that sentence, I thought, I should be the one to say it. From that time, I thought I had to try to overcome it, so I continued," Ngoc wiped her tears and encouraged herself.
Letter to mother
Ngoc studied at the Department of Commerce and Tourism at Surugadai University (Japan), in which she studied Japanese for the first 2 years, then went to university. For more than 5 years living in the land of cherry blossoms, she pays for her living expenses, while her school fees are supported by her parents. Ngoc is only allowed to work 3 extra days a week, the expenditure is just enough, so she has to learn how to save as much as possible.
The university program puts pressure on Dong Thap girls. She is always expected to be diligent, study well, and rank high. This became an invisible wall when Ngoc went to Japan.
"My mother is loving but very strict. For example, when she likes to eat, she will cook for her, do all the housework so that I have time to study. But in return, she has quite high requirements in academic achievement. I also want my children to be in the top 3. Until I get to high school, the pressure is higher, everything is more difficult, I am no longer in the top.
At that time, my mother was sad, very disappointed. I also did not dare to talk to my mother, I only dared to write her a letter, saying: I have tried my best, but it may not be as expected of her. But please understand for me, because I always try to learn everything," Ngoc confided.
Then it was the pressure that made Ngoc's strength rise. She regained her confidence, worked hard, and studied more on her own. Ngoc even set up a YouTube channel so that she can save everyday moments as a diary, reminding herself...
After about 3 months, Ngoc's videos are known to many people. To date, her channel has attracted nearly 200,000 followers, can turn on the monetization function.
Due to the epidemic, Ngoc has not been able to visit home often for several years. The journey to study abroad is still arduous ahead, but the young girl is not discouraged because her family is always next to her.
Ngoc plans to return home after finishing her studies in Japan and spend more time with her parents. In addition, she is also very passionate about content creation and wants to pursue this job for a long time.
