In early February, Doechii won Best Rap Album for Alligator Bites Never Heal at the 2025 Grammy Awards. When rapper Cardi B read out the winner's name, Doechii burst into tears offstage.
The Florida-based artist is the third female rapper in Grammy history to win Best Rap Album, after Lauryn Hill and Cardi B. In her acceptance speech, she thanked her label, team, and fans for their support. "I poured my heart and soul into this mixtape. I expose.d my life, my pai.n and my struggles.
I gave it my all and God said it would pay off. I know there are a lot of black women watching me right now, and I want to say, 'You can do it. Don't let anybody put any stereotype on you,'" the rapper said. Doechii cried as she accepted the 2025 Grammy for Best Rap Album. She was also nominated for Best New Artist and Best Rap Performance.
After Doechii won the Grammy, an old video of her from 2020 went viral on social media, garnering tens of thousands of views. In the video, she recalled the hardships of being laid off. "So I got fired today," she said. "I think I'm going to go to a bunch of studios tomorrow and ask if they have any internships. I have nothing to lose."
The 27-year-old artist, whose real name is Jaylah Ji'mya Hickmon, was born in Tampa, USA, to a father and uncle who are both rappers. As a chil.d, Doechii enjoyed writing poetry, studying ballet, tap dancing, acting, gymnastics, and playing soccer. She intended to become a professional choir singer until a friend encouraged Doechii to become an independent artist, producing and releasing music online. She began her music career with the song Girls, posted on SoundCloud in 2016. After releasing On the Places You'll Go in 2020, Doechii became famous on TikTok.
In 2021, Doechii's music caught the attention of Anthony "Moosa" Tiffith Jr., president of Top Dawg Entertainment, the powerhouse label behind SZA and Kendrick Lamar. Tiffith encouraged Doechii to move to Los Angeles, provided her with housing, and signed her in 2022.
The rapper opened for SZA's Good Days tour. Spotify, Complex, and HipHopDX named her an Artist to Watch in 2022. Her 2023 single What It Is (Block Bo.y) marked her first entry on the Billboard Ho.t 100. In an interview with GQ, Doechii said she is bisexual and has faced discrimination in her artistic pursuits. According to Doechii, her music inspires the LGBTQ community - notably the song "Yucky Blucky" - encouraging them to be true to themselves, creating empathy from listeners.
In late August 2024, Doechii released her debut album Alligator Bites Never Heal. According to Variety, the work was born from the singer's experiences. Songs like Denial is a River, about her struggles with depression and addiction, resonated with audiences.
According to the review aggregator Metacritic, Alligator Bites Never Heal received a score of 79/100 from critics. Rolling Stone magazine praised Doechii for her versatility in rapping, influenced by R&B. The lyrics of the songs portray Doechii as a gir.l trying to establish her position in the music industry, which is also one of the main themes of the work.
On his personal page, Doechii explained the album's name: "The crocodile performs a spinning motion called the 'deat.h twist' to submerge and tear apart its prey underwater. Last year, I experienced the exact same thing as the deat.h twist, conflict with the record label, lack of creative inspiration. While researching crocodile attacks, I realized that people survived because they fought back. This project is my response. I am not anyone's prey, I was born to be a predator."
The rapper has been inspired by many famous artists such as Nicki Minaj, Lauryn Hill, Kanye West, Tyler, The Creator and Kendrick Lamar. She describes her music as "next generation" hip hop. Many of Doechii's products have received high praise from experts, on par with Nickj Minaj, Missy Elliot, Doja Cats and Azelia Banks.
In an interview with Joe Budden in 2024, she said she overcame alcoholism and stayed away from drug.s thanks to music. On Elle, the artist encouraged fans to live a healthy, positive life and always look forward to a bright future. The Economic Times commented that after the 2025 Grammys, Doechii's name will go far. According to Vulture, the rapper maintained her composure and intelligence after receiving the Golden Horn and support from the public. In the future, Doechii hopes to collaborate with Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj and Drake.
Recently, Jennie released the 3rd single from her debut album RUBY - ExtraL. Accompanying the main rapper of the global gir.l group this time is Doechii - a Gen Z rapper who is making an impression in the US with his extremely "sharp" rap style, catchy and trendy music. Together with Doechii, Jennie inspires women to confidently do whatever they want, breaking the rules. The collab is so smooth, Jennie and Doechii are causing a fever on social networks, the MV ExtraL quickly reached more than 1.7 million views after only 3 hours of airing, promising to "break" the digital music charts in the near future.
From here, Doechii caught the attention of Kpop fans. People started to learn about the cool female rapper who just "swept away" the stage with Jennie in the MV ExtraL.
However, Doechii has recently been in trouble with a series of suspicions of racism surrounding him. It is known that the video was posted 12 years ago, when the owner was only 15 years old. At that time, Doechii was a vlogger on YouTube, often posting content about the life of a teenage gir.l. Through a clip from a video, Doechii showed her voice and pronunciation that was said to mimic Asians in a negative way.
There has long been a stereotype that Asians often speak English incorrectly, lack fluency, or have incorrect accents. Therefore, Doechii was accuse.d of deliberately insulting and satirizing Asians. Netizens felt both confused and angry because she herself is a person of color, part of the "vulnerable" community and has been discriminated against for a long time. Yet, the female rapper made fun of Asians, applying the same offensive formula that the black community has been fightin.g for to gain equality and respect.
