What makes young people fall in love with the Hoang Yen version of Bolero?

On a sunny afternoon at the end of the year, we had the opportunity to chat with Hoang Yen, a promising young singer who is bringing Bolero music closer to young people. With an inspiring voice and modern performance style, Hoang Yen is gradually asserting her name in the Vietnamese music industry.

Reporter: What made Hoang Yen choose Bolero, a genre of music that seemed to be only for the previous generation, to pursue?

Hoang Yen: I have loved Bolero since I was very young. Bolero's deep, lyrical melodies are part of childhood memories. I want to bring these songs closer to young people, so that they can feel the beauty and value of this music. Through those image-rich lyrics, they are very cherished loves such as love for the homeland, motherhood, and couple love. And somewhere there is a little regret, separation so that we can appreciate reality more.

PV: How did Yen make a traditional Bolero song attractive to today's young people?

Hoang Yen: In order for Bolero to get closer to young people, Yen thinks we need to have new ways of doing things. That way I re-perform the song in my own way. Some of Yen's songs are performed in a local accent to both create novelty and attraction, but also create a sense of familiarity for the compatriot audience. Or there are songs with very good and meaningful passages, Yen will separate that part, to form small videos. Helping young people to get acquainted and receptive, gradually becoming more fond of it. However, the most important thing is still to keep the soul of Bolero.

Reporter: It is known that Yen owns a Youtube channel with 42N followers and TikTok with more than 67N followers. Most of them are young audiences. Is this a way for you to convey Bolero to young people?

Hoang Yen: Yes, Yen pays great attention to the platforms that young people are interested in and use a lot. Therefore, I have invested and made the most of social networking sites. In many different forms, from making MVs, livestreams, participating in challenges, mini games, posting positive content...

PV: Can you share a little about the difficulties of bringing Bolero to young people?

Hoang Yen: Because this is a genre of music that requires a lot of time to contemplate and feel, the biggest difficulty is probably how to make young audiences approach Bolero naturally and love it more and more.
In addition to the above ways of sharing. Yen has tried to create quality music products, by making well-thought-out MVs, with beautiful images, creative camera angles, and realistic expressions. Besides, Yen also pursues diverse and appropriate fashion styles. For young audiences, Yen chooses modern, trendy outfits, clear makeup... to build the image of a young Bolero singer, will partly find sympathy and attraction of the audience at this age.

PV: What are your plans for your music career in the near future?

Hoang Yen: In the near future, Yen will continue to select and launch new music products. I still have a lot of songs that are requested by the audience and are waiting to be recorded. In addition, Yen also wants to organize Bolero music nights exclusively for young people, to create a playground for lovers of this music.
